I just bought a '94 vmax 600. It has a low end bog, gets a terrible 5 mpg and fouls plugs at least once a day. Runs fine above 6000 rpm. The dealership said something like the needle and nozzle in carbs are worn, causing excess fuel to flow into cylinders...make any sense? He also said that there is special tool needed to replace these items. Is he trying to sell me a repair job? I have never worked on flat slide carbs, but I need to learn sometime.

Needle jet removal:
-Remove air box
-Remove the top cover off each carb
-Using an allen key remove two screws from the throttle lever assembly
-Clamp down the throttle lever (this will bring the lever assembly to the top so you can get at the needle jet)
-Move the slider up enough so you can pull the needle out of the throttle valve assembly (careful not to loose any washers)
When re-installing needle, make sure you adjust 'C' clip and washers for proper altitude (see TY tech pages)
Check air pilot screw for proper adjustment, you will have to remove carbs for this adjustment (see TY tech pages)
Adjust throttle free play and oil cable adjustment
Make sure you have the proper main jets for your altitude (see TY tech pages)
Good Luck!

A ball style allen wrench works best to remove the allen screws. Also you may drop the needle one position. I did this on a 94 and 95 VMax 600. It cleaned up the mid range and added 2 to mpg.
