I have an 02 viper and i just changed the hyfax. I have my limiters tighten up so i have 1.125" of "thread" showing (not including the nut). I am set at the middle setting on the FRA.. my track is looser than what the factory spec is and i am still burning up hyfax. 400 miles in great snow conditions and i have to change them again. I am running 144 studs down the middle so i can't go too loose.
Can someone help me with a proper set up. At this point i don't care how it rides as much, i just hate changing these things every weekend. I have had it right on in the past where i was getting 1000 miles on them so i know it can be done. If you have a good set up can you share it with me? i am looking to get more life out of these things. I know about the larger polaris wheel in front but as i mentioned i have had better wear in the past with the stock skid. PLEASE HELP!!
i should mention, it's only wearing at the curve in front. the rest of the hyfax looks new..

are you breaking them in.....run them as hot as you can and kool them quickly to temper the surface.....its a real bitch but works......one thing to keep in mind, new they will wear fast about 1/2 way to the line and then stop.
they are all the way to the line already. I am just looking for a good place to start. What the limiters should be set at, FRA etc.. i wish i could get them to wear somewhat evenly.
i didn't break them in, i was thinking about using a torch before i installed them. But i think there is too much tension at the curve and NO tension on the rest of the track.

How about your track tension are you running it too tight?
It's actually loose if anything. I have about 2" or slightly more at 20lbs of pull in the middle of the track. It's real tight up by the curve but loose in the middle.
take some of your center spring tension off and if you track dont ratchet you can lesson that more.

well
set the center spring to zero preload with the weight of the sled on the track. That will help a bunch. I took a heat gun to a set, then tossed them out in the snow a couple times, got 700 miles on them, some very low snow, and still better than half. Maxdlx

my 02 viper has 2700 miles on the original hyfax. track is way loose and zero preload on center shock. I dont run the extra wheels either. Like someone else said they wear real fast to the line then hold there.
sorry for being dumb, but adjusting the center shock preload.. how? does it need to come out to adjust it? or just get in there and turn the collars?
Does zero preload mean no tension on the spring? how do i tell if it's zero preload?

Yes zero preload is no tension....you get the idea....more preload puts more pressure on the front of the track

Okay, i have zero preload already. i can spin the spring by hand. any other suggestions? maybe tightening the track a tad?

Here is what I run on a 02 Viper . . .
Center spring length - 8.25 inches
Rear spring length - 13.8 inches
Limiter Straps - .825 inch from bracket
Track tension - 2.5 inches sag at 18 lbs force
I use the FRA to adjust for conditions and rider.
This is with 168 studs in stock track. (still don't have the ripsaw on yet)
I usually go 3000 miles per set of hyfax.

When my Hyfax wear low in a spot or two and require attention, I pull them off, turn each one end for end and reinstall the same sliders.....Wear spots are now relocated and good to go for another while before needing to purchase again....
You'll need to drill and reem a hole for each at the front again but works great...
good luck...

I'm in the same situation, I have a '99 SX 700 and I just put a set on a couple of weeks ago, I managed to get 600 km on them and I just checked them today and they are to the wear line, and almost past in some parts, so I have to replace them again. When i put them on i got them real hot and pulled into some deep snow and covered them, I thought I had tempered them. I had put a set on last year and got close to 3000 km on them and they were not wore as bad as these ones. Snow conditions were not great but should have had plently of loose surface to keep them cool. The only difference between this year and last are I am now running bergstrom carbides and ski saveers which may lift the ski's up a bit higher, would that do it? I am running 0 preload on center shock and the rear is almost tightened all it will go, I am wearing them hard at the back of the track, but they wore from the boogie wheels back quite bad. Should i put some extra preload on the center shock now? Really need some help guys, I can't afford to keep replacing theses hyfax the way there going thanks a lot

Are you running the black hiperformance ones? I run these on my SRX and they last about 1500-2000 miles and everyone nows how the SRX likes hyfax.
