another classic example of a viper wiring harness rub through. i'm glad i checked it out-- it happened on the section you guys said, but not too far down- just under the mag side carb bowl where it was resting on the aluminum tunnel. sure enough, about 3 wires were worn partially flat, and one of them was showing a little tiny strand of copper(white wire) which had been arcing on the tunnel- you could tell because there were little grooves cut in the aluminum. i never noticed any symptoms- except maybe once- when my speedo flipped out. i think i caught it before it got real bad. a big thanks to all you guys-and this awesome site!! this could have happened at the wrong place at the wrong time!-- like in the middle of nowhere! if anyone hasn't checked theirs yet, please do- it doesn't take long. i tried posting pics but the files were too large- if anyone needs them i can e-mail them.

Is this a problem with the 02 viper or all vipers (02-04) I am wondering if this is something I should be looking for or is it only on the 2002 vipers?

i honestly don't know if the other years have this problem-- someone else should chime in on it though. a buddy of mine has a viper s that we'll have to look at too.
if you guys get my e-mails can you let me know how they came out? not that great at e-mailing pics.

my wires rubbed through on my 02. i'm not sure exactly where, i can't remember. when i had the motor out of mine last year to fix a motor mount, i recovered the entire wiring harness from one end to the other just to be safe. no better time to do it when the motor is out.

first take your pipe and muffler off, then i unplugged the two big connectors from the hood, followed the wire under the pipe and under the motor- undoing all the clips as you go, and it comes up behind the motor between your disc brake and mag side carb. mine was zip tied to a large coolant hose. once you get it freed up and loose you can pull it up through and inpect it. some say to tie a string to the end in case you pull it all the way out- but i didn't have to pull it out that far-- hope this helps!

all vipers are affected by the rub through. To fix it with the engine still in the sled disconnect all the wires up by the gauge pod and tie some string to the end of the them, and pull them out from under the engine. Use the string to pull the wires back under the engine when you are done wrapping them.

What do you wrap the harnes with? Do you just use elect. tape, or is there something special to use?

wrap each individual wire with electrical tape and then wrap the entire harness in some wire loom or other tough, flexible plastic coating.
