My speedometer on a 2000 SRX700 does not work. Tracking the cable out of the spedo to the front shaft is all working fine. It seems the speedometer inside somehow is broken. Taking a small screw driver and turning the spindle as fast as I can produces no reading....... backing up my claim. It seems the speedometer is a sealed unit and not really intuitive for tinkering. Correct me if I am wrong here so I know if I can disassemble it and maybe find a smaller part to fix inside it.
When looking for a speedometer on forums within totally Yamaha and on Ebay, there are more people than I expected currently looking or previously looking for speedometers like this. IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM that any of you have heard of? Thanks, Hilmee

are you sure that it is not down by the driveshaft that it is broken. Most of the time a drive bearing that is starting to go breaks the speedo key off, making the speedometer not work. Also sometimes the 90* speedo gear box locks up, again breaking the drive key because the shaft tries to turn it and the seize boxed wont let it. Check that all is well down there first.
It's almost always the speedo key. Very common on theses sleds.
easy to check
put the sled up on a stand ,unhook the cable from back of speedo and run the sled, see if the cable turns? if it does, then yes it would be the speedo guage.
If it doesnt its most likley the speedo drive key in the driveshaft, remove speedo drive gear box by the 3 bolts behind the secondary clutch, see if the little key is broken, if it is, thats the speedo problem,HOWEVER, when its broken, its a sign that the bearings have gotten slop in them on the driveshaft and a clue to replace them

Hilmee, I ran into the same situation this fall. While prepping my sled, I found that the speedo was not working. The speed side bearing had been replace last year during the track swap so I was sure that wasn't the issue. And here is what I found.
After pulling the secondary clutch, I removed the speedo cable that's attatched to the bulkhead. The key metioned above was twisted rather extensively. I didn't think that the drive shaft(turns the track or the shaft with the drivers attatched) was the culprit. So I took a #2 square headed bit, matching the size of the key, and placed into the speedo cable side giving it good turn only to find that the speedo cable was rusted into place. After applying some penetrating oil, I was able to turn the cable with the screwdriver and bit. Have had no problems since. I also applied some "Never Seize" around the inside of the speedo cable housing. Hope that prevents any rust over next summers sit.

Great feedback anymore based on this knowledge?
I have unhooked the spedo and put the sled up on a stand and when running it the cable up by the spedo is turning at a good rate. I checked for sloppiness at coming out of the driveshaft and all seems to be tight and working. The cable is not rusted as I can turn it with my fingers on one end and see it turn on the other. So, with this additional info. are some of you still thinking it is related to the spedo key or cable? Secondly like I said, I put a small screw driver in the spedo guage and turn it as fast as I can and no reading. It leads me to believe it is the guage. One last time, do I have any takers on this theory?
You guys are great and I really appreciate all the input :-)

With your research, I would have to agree that it's the gauge itself. You can find them on ebay regularly. Good luck.

Make sure you a turning it counter clockwise. If you try to turn the cable clockwise nothing will happen. Take a corless drill, unhook the speedocable at the drive (under secondary clutch), pull the cable up a little so you can get at it, put the end of the speedo cable in the drill chuck, and run the grill in reverse to see if the speedo is working. I guessing the speeo is working (gauges go bad very very rarley). Like others had said it is most likely the key. $4.77 from a Yamaha dealer Part number 8k4-47715-00-00.

from what you have stated about your trial it sounds like the speedo itself is bad. As long as the cable is turning up at the speedo end with the sled up on a track stand, the rest of the system is working fine. Find a new speedo and throw it in.

Oops, I guess I should have read further. If the cable is turning at the spedo, it almost has to be the speedo itself. I think you can get a used one for about $100-150Hilmee said:I have unhooked the spedo and put the sled up on a stand and when running it the cable up by the spedo is turning at a good rate.
