How do you set timing on a 2 stroke ? ? ?

I need to set the timing on a 540 which has no battery. I have a Sears 4, 6, 8 cylinder light which lights and flashes on my electric start 97 Venture but, not the old 540 even though I’m using the battery from the Venture for power. I do not have a dial indicator to manually set. Thanks for any ideas Chuck

I bought a dial indicator from Harbor Freight, then got one of those "anti-fouler" spark plug extensions from Napa. Drill a hole in the side (one of the flats) of the extension for a set screw to hold the dial indicator. Works great for me.

To set the timing correctly you will need a dial indicator.
