I was given a 2000 Yamaha RSX 700 - it's got 8k miles, but my buddy had me ride it, man it was fast, he started it with like 3 pulls. Anyway now I have it home, I got it out couldn't get it started. I am hoping someone on here can give me some suggestions. I probably should have listen better to my buddy when he showed me how to work it.

Anyway, you put the key in the ignition (I noticed there is a start, after warmer, which only toggles, it doesn't stay (does/can you get electric start for this machine?). Anyway I move it to on, put the choke down one, then down another, I pulled it a few times, didn't sound like it was doing anything. I did give it a litte throtte and pulled a couple times, almost sounded like it would start. Anyway I've seen him start it up just like that, I must be missing something. Did I flood it? Could I have flooded it in transport. I've got a couple ATVs and basically we have a switch for the gas (off, on, reserve) and usually it's good to turn it off while transporting it.

Any help please, I am hoping to ride around the field tonight, since we've got some snow. thanks to all who answer me soon,

Chuck Durham

It sounds like it's flooded. I assume the kill switch is in the up position. They can flood while intransit. Pull the plugs and see if they are wet. If so, dry them with Gumout and a propane torch and try again without the choke being on. You can also drain the carb bowls so no more gas gets through the system for a short time..Let us know how you make out.

Bluehammer thanks for getting back to me quickly, I am an idiot, I should have known the kill switch. I flipped that and the sled started in one pull - man I have to say this RSX is pretty sweet. 8,000 miles seems like alot to me for a rec vehicle, I don't think I would buy a quad that old, but I am amazed at how long people have these sleds. Well the guy that I got it from is a big time into sleds, he's got like 9 figured he needed to make space for a new one, so I lucked out with my timing. I was just about to buy a Ski-doo Mach Z. This gives me a chance to find out what I like about snowmobiling, what style, etc.

So anyway, started up, warmed it for a minute or so and took off, no problem. I think I need to were a sign from Bill Engvall for this one.

might want to let it warm up a bit longer than a minute unless you enjoy doing top end rebuilds, and some people do ;)!

I can tell you are new to Yamaha's as well.
Your sled is an SRX not RSX. Very nice machine and very fast. With 8k miles you ,ay want to have the power valves cleaned as well as the carbs. Check the brearings, shocks and track. Not to sound sarcastic or anything but you know you need to put 2 stroke oil in the machine.
I have done the same thing with the kill switch so dont feel bad.

also don't start the sled cold by using the throttle anymore, or you will be replacing plugs like crazy.

oh man I screwed up the name of the sled, okay fixed that in my profile, This forum is great, thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I haven't really done much research on the sleds, I was leaning toward the Ski-Doo Mach Z, although I am a big Yamaha fan - always had Yamaha Motorcycles when I was younger and now I've got ATVs. This being next to nothing I figured what the heck. From what I am hearing online it seems to be quite a sled.

I am going to take the SRX to the local shop and have them check it out.

man thats an awfully lot of sled for you never ridnig one before. be carful man & get to no that sled & have fun.have your dealer or a buddy thats knows what he is doing work & keep up the maitnece on it & you should get another 8 thousand out of it

Ride safe and enjoy. You made the right decision with going to yamaha.

Get yourself a manual and if your a little mechanically enclined you can do alot yourself. They even have trouble shooting for in the future.

(I first read the rsx and thought it was the new yami out or something...until I saw the year ;)! )

yea it should treat you well, i just bought a 99 srx and let me tell you, you found the right place for when you need some help! only been on here about a month and these guys are great, they've walked me through just about everything so far. i'd do everything that everyone one else said, and clean the carbs too! it made a world of a difference for me. dont be intimidated, this is my first sled and first 2 stroke in addition to that, and the regular maintainance seems to be a piece of cake so far
