Hi fellow SRX riders ! .
A month ago I sold my RX-1 and bought a much cheaper sled, a 1999 SRX 700 that is extended to 136" with 2" lugs. (I wanted to reduce my morgage, I`m 20 years old).
Anyway, when I bought the sled there was only about 20cm of snow here. I`ve been riding back and forth on the fields but never ridden in the woods/mountains. However, that last couple of days it has been snowing quite much. No there is about 80cm of powder snow up in the mountains.
Last night a friend visited me and I wanted to take him for a ride on the sled. We followed the "tractor road" in the woods and start to climb up on the mountains, the trial is kind of tight and curly with lots of trees so I ride quite slow, at ca 5500-6000rpm. I`m used to riding dirtbikes and I know that riding much at low rpm isn`t good, so I was worried about plug fouling so I heat the throttle a few times just to clear out the gum but it was right there, nice and crisp so I figured it wasn`t a problem.
Well, when we reached the first steep hill (there was about 70cm of snow there) we ran into problems. The hill is only about 25-30 meters long, but it`s kind of hard because there is a sharp turn in the bottom of the hill so you can`t build up speed before the hill.
I was riding at about 5500rpm and when I cleared the turn I hit the throttle to make it up that hill. At that time the powder snow was kind of flowing over the hood. Suddenly it started hesitating and wouldn`t rew properly and therefore we didn`t make it to the top.
I imediately thought that i was a fouled plug or something, so I was kind of ancious (spelling?) to ride it back home because I`ve heard that it`s not good to ride if it doesn`t run on all cylinders.
We turned the sled around and started going back. After about 200meters I tried to hit the throttle and now it was just fine, nice and crisp and rewed like hell.
(I didn`t have spare plugs if you wondered why I didn`t change them, had them lying in my workshop, forgot to put them in the sled hehe).
This morning I filled the sled up with gas and oil and I decided to put new plugs in it.
This evening we went riding again, sled ran fine until came to the powder snow areas, just like yesterday it started hesitating.
I`m kind of frustrated because there is no point in having a high lug belt if the sled wount run in the poweder... if you see what I mean.
Any opinions on this one?.
It`s obvious that is has something to do with the snow flowing over the hood.
Is it possible that the snow can get into the air filters and into the carbs?.
I guess there will be some snow hitting the sparkplugs/caps under the hood, could this affect them?. (I`m just curious.. ).
Hmm...
Any tips?.

I`ll finish it off with a picture of the sled.

I bet your sled is bogging in deep powder. Try getting a exhaust deflector from a mounainmax, so the exhaust gases can escape rather than being trapped at the outlet, of snow.
Also, make sure you got that plastic piece over the ovale hole above your secondary clutch. If that is not on, snow dust could easily get into your clutches..
Good evening Norwegian! .
I did a search and I found this:
http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1580&highlight=powder
So my problems is likely that the snow blocks the exhaust pipe if I didn`t understand you wrong?. The exhaust deflector only costs 10$ (from what I read in the thread above) so it`s nothing to hassle about, I need one.
So you don`t think the snow is getting into the air filter?.
Where is the air inlet in the air box?. Is it on the top like I think?. Under the three holes in the hood, right under the instruments?.
I took a look on the air filter "swamp" under the three holes, it looke dry and nice, this was a while after we rode in the soft stuff so I guess (if there was any) could have melted and disappeared?.
So it is possible to fix?.

Begin with the exhaust deflector and make sure you have pre filters on the holes on your dash and see what happens then..

You might also consider that the snow was getting on the ignition wires just like a car oor truck and makeing them crossfire. check for cracks in the wires or connections around the coils.
Good morning everybody! .
Norwegian, when you say "pre filters" do you mean that I should install som filters under the three holes?. Should they be attached to the hood ?. Do I have to buy them?. Where?.
Ohh uh, do you mean this?.
If maxximum performance has that exhaust deflector then I will order the deflector and the pre filter.
Oh by the way guys, when I bought the sled I got all the stuff that he had removed when he extended it + som other stuff. I noticed this black plastic thing, it had the same shape as the top of the air filter and there was three holes in it (same as those in the hood), I first thought that he had removed it for some reason but I wasn`t able to make it fit on top o the air filter so I figured that it wasn`t suppost to be there... ?.
Should there be some plastic on top of the air filter ?.
I took a picture of the exhaust outlet...
I think it`s wierd that the exhust pressure doesn`t blow the snow away but.. wellwell .

You have to take a photo of that plastic thing. The thing I am talking about is the "lamell", A ovale plastic thing, that goes on your hood, to block a hole...
By prefilters I mean round shapes for the round holes on top of your hood just below the gauges. They should be of the same material as your air filter on your airbox, but I guess that pre filter would work good too.
Ok norwegian ! . Yeah I think the pre filter that covers the whole air box will work, was suppost to reduce air flow with only 1% so I guess it wount hurt the performance either.
I`ll grab my camera and take a picture of the plastic thing as we speak, back in a moment ! .

Here it is:
Wierd... do you recognize it?.
This is my dirtbike and it has absolutely nothing to do with my sled.. incase you wondered .

See if you can find it in the microfishe at www.ronnies.com
Good idea Norwegian and look what I found:
There it is, number 20.
I wonder if it has something to do with my problems?.
Why did the previous owner remove it??. Probably thought that it would run better or something... .

I have no idea why he removed it. But I had the same problems with my 98 srx 600. Never tried to fix it though.
Ok... so your 600 bogged in the powder?.
I have to get it fixed because sometimes I need all the power the sled makes.

Hi guys I`m just wondering if someone knows why the previous owner removed the plastic thing I posted a picture uf above, from the airfilter box ?.

i dont know why he removed it but put it back in,also check if the vertical shelfes are missing(22 and 23).the airbox is a well tuned unit that yamaha has worked alot on-as u see the in picture the airbox is divided in 3,one section for each carb and part #20 has some "airhorns" that is tuned to the overall calibration of the carbs-im not an expert but i think that in this case i would leave it stock.
also check if the previous owner has changed the jetting(pilots, mains, needles).
i know that on some older sleds u could gain some hp by emptying the airbox and changing the jetting, but i dont think it is the case on the srx-im sure some more experienced tuners on this site will correct me if im wrong...

Thanks for the reply zapse!.
I will remove the air box and refit nr.20.I will also check if the shelfes are missing in action.
I don`t wether I should remove the carbs and blow through them?.
Are they any harder to remove then other carbs?. Anything I should be aware of ?.

the new srx's dont have the dividers in the airbox, and a lot of people remove the shelf to get more airflow. I would probably put the shelf back in, but don't put the dividers in there.
OK Yamahaholic thanks! .
By the previous owner didn`t give me any shelfs so I guess they are still there.
Should remove them then??.
Today I ordered a Pre filter and a deflector kit from Rich! . (he hadn`t sent my last order yet so he could put it in the same package.
Today I picked up my new ski plastic, I think the ski`s were too thin so I will do just the same as I did on my RX-1 , install wider ski plastic. (I ordered the exact same ski plastic so I hope it fits somewhat OK).
Wider skis will make it float better I guess, also decreasing the exhaust-pipe-snow problem. (slightly "wish thinking", hehe).
