just about to attempt to do a carb cleaning on the viper-- i don't beleive they've ever been cleaned before w/3000 miles on it, and it'll be my first tme with this sled. it's got the typical high idle hang @ 4000, blip choke and it comes back to normal. i read the carb cleaning section in tech pages, and had a couple of questions before i start. any help would be greatly appreciated:
--i know the fix for the idle hang is to richen the fuel screws, but could this also be from dirty carbs? i'm thinking that cleaning them alone might fix it? or should i turn the fuel screws out while i'm in there? on one hand i don't want to richen it if i don't necessarily have to... on the other hand i don't want to pull the carbs again to access the screws
--i see you have to remove the coolant lines, but in the tech pages it didn't mention anything about bleeding the air out after. am i going to have to bleed the system?
thanks ahead of time and i may have a few more quest's on the way through!

The cooling system HAS to be bled ANYTIME you open it up!!!!!! (a good habit to get into)... The bleeder screw is under the seat.. TWO nuts and washers and the seat comes right off!!! As far as the carbs hanging open, there might be a problem with the slides or a scratch or something other than dirt!!!!! LOOK CAREFULLY, if you don;t see anything, than cleaning them up will work!!!! The best bet is to LEAVE EVERYTHING SET at where it was!!!!!! It is a real bear to try and get those carbs as right as stock!!!!!ESPECIALLY if you don't do tem a lot!!!! Hope that helps!!! Gary Oles nosboy

thanks nos- i guess i will be bleeding it then. i opened up the carbs and they looked real clean- no plugged pilots or any other passages that i can see. i also don't think the slides are hanging up- they work real nice, so i sprayed everything out w/carb cleaner and air and put em back together. the fuel screws are out 2-1/4 turns, and the stock chart says 1-7/8, so i don't think i should turn them out any more to correct the lean high idle?? anyone else??

I had the same problem first year out. What I did was up the idle a touch and problem was gone. I can't remember where I have it set at now but I think it ended up 2 or 300 more than the stock idle. Hope this helps ya out.

did you also clean the air jets? that was where my problem was, dont know if you saw my other thread. i was beating myself up after cleaning my carbs because i had that high idle, and it turned out that through cleaning them, i plugged one of the air jets (which are on the inlet side of the carb)

is that one of the holes near the the slides, or is it inside the bowl?

The sled was like that from day one. I did it after the first few days of riding the sled brand new. You could be right, Maybe the sled had bad or a clogged jet from day one but never had a problem since. The first year there were many of us with the problem and that seemed to fix it. In my case without thinking about it so much the problem was solved. It was new and didn't and never worried about the air jets because it was a common problem from day one with the sled. Hope this helps and you should clean those carbs anyway and see. If the problem still there go to plan B and that should solve it. It did for me and it worked with a couple rpm's.

yes i did clean that one. also, i put it back together and was bleeding the coolant, bled the air bubbles out of the back of the sled a couple times, and tried to bleed the screw at the carb heater switch. i took the screw right out and didn't see any anti-freeze at all with the switch on or off. tried it with the sled both cold and warm. is this normal??
