Hi,
Need some help/advice...just bought a 93 Exciter SX...on the first real ride this weekend I discovered that it burns 25 litres (5 gallons) in 50 km (30 miles)!! the sled is stock except for a Bender single pipe and jetting...
Is this normal? Anybody else out there with the same setup? What should a stock Exciter SX get for fuel mileage..?
Help!!
Mike.

you should be getting 10-12 miles per gallon with that sled at least I think. I had a 93 Exciter II LE, and if I remember correctly I would get 100-120 miles per tank, which is actually between 12-15 mpg. And with what you're saying you are getting around 6 miles per gallon. Somethings wrong. I would ride it and then give it a good sniff all around to see if u smell any leaking gas, I sprung a leak 2 times on my '93. Also with that Bender pipe, someone may have jetted it really fat which would kill your gas mileage and rob u of hp. I would see if you can get a hold of a tuning sheet to see what jets and clutching it should have and then take a look at what it really has. Also, put up a post to ask for good set ups with those SXs, they can be a really mean sled if set up right! Good luck

the most i could get from my sx was 100km. it had a psi single and i went up on my mains from 155's to 157.5 as per the instructions for the pipe. plugs were always a nice tan , did not run rich . i dont think you will get anymore than 100km.

I used to get 100 miles on my 93 SX with an AAEN pipe, but I was a nervous puppy the last 10. I can't remember for sure but I think I went up one jet size instead of the two that AAEN suggested because it ran fat stock. There's my two cents.

Check for fuel leaks on the gas line that serves as your fuel guage. My old exciter started leaking on the bottom fitting on the bottom of the tank. The fuel line gets hard and brittle and starts to leak.
YOu should be able to see sign s of leakage.

My only questions to the Fonz is, How is the sled running? Is it running rich? Do you smell a strong fuel oder? What do the plugs look like. Fonz, Let us know what it is acting like to better help you.

The sled was gas fouling a plug but actually ran pretty good....high idle that I couldn't bring down...but now that I think of it...it's probably the fuel pump...becuase when I took the carbs off to clean them...fuel was running out of one or both of the lines....
Changing the pump on Friday..we'll see..
thanks,

what mains did you put in it, those things were rich from the start, they came with 155's and we ran them with 150's all day long so go from there.

My wifes sled is exactly the same specs as yours....
Stock 93 SX with single Bender.
* In the powder never more than --> 2,1 Litre / 10 Km
* Steady speed on the trail never more than --> 1,5 Litre / 10 Km
* Playing around --> 1,8 Litre / 10 Km
I do not know the main jets in the sled.... Sorry !!
Something must bee wrong with your sled. !

is that with a pipe or stock?
Fonz,
I have a 87 exciter with round slides, bored carbs , updated clutching, Twin PSI pipes and I frequently get 155km or 98 miles out of a tank when running trails and cold , hence jetted crisp. Check your jetting, fuel pump, and clutching.

Found the Problem!!
The problem I was having turned out to be stuck choke cable....!! Chokes appeared to work fine but upon closer inspection, I found that when you pulled on the brass choke "bullets" they would come out a couple of more millimeters....hence the choke circuits where to some degree...stuck open...
Changed the cable....filled it up....huge sigh of relief....no snow to run much but got 30 miles and just over three quarters full....Yeah!!
Thanks for all the input...
