Hi,
I just bought a 93 Exciter SX and after taking it out on it's first real ride, I discovered that there was a real problem with fuel consumption...i got 30 miles on one tank of gas!!! The sled has a bender pipe and is jetted...but other than that it is completely stock...Does anybody else have the same set up? What is acceptable fuel consumption for this engine with the Bender pipe?
thanks,
Mike.

I have the PSI, and am running stock jets, 155 mains and 55 pilots. It still doesn't run 100%, it's not lean though.
Check the clutches.
How does it run? whats your altitude and riding temps?
I bet someone has the Bender jetting sheet someplace.

fuel pump diaphragm leaking? If you pull the two lines that go to the carbs does fuel drip from one or both? This happened with my cousin's viper, replaced the pump and all good.

exciter SX fuel consumption problem
The sled runs pretty good...idling too high....can't get the idle down without the T.O.R.S. kickin in...do the choke bullets have to installed in a certain way...I don't have a manual for this sled yet..I took the carbs off when I got it to clean them because the sled wouldn't run...??I'm baffled....one plugs seeme to be really wet...like it';s washed in gas...

I don't think the fuel pump is leaking because i don't smell or see any gas in the sled...if I was losing it through the fuel pump....you'd definitely be able to smell gasoline wouldn't you?
gotta find the prob...driving me mad!

no if a diaphragm is leaking it will allow WAY too much fuel to at least one cylinder. If you pull your fuel lines off that run to the carbs and fuel is running out of one, you have a leaky diaphragm.

Hi,
I did have the carbs off to clean them....fuel was leaking out of at least one...maybe both....but if the diaphram is leaking fuel...where is it going? Into the crankcase? Could that be why I'm fouling one plug (mag side) all the time...? Could that also be why I can't get to idle down to spec. (1500 +- 100)....it idles at around 2800 - 3000 if i turn the idle screw down to a point where it's idling at 1500....when I hit the gas T.O.R.S. kicks on...

If the fuel pump was sending way too much fuel to one cylinder, wouldn't the needle and seat inside the bowl control how much fuel enters the bowl??

you would think it would but this was the case on our viper, the engine was definately getting way too much fuel. Diaphragm was leaking in the fuel pump, found a cheap used fuel pump threw it on and it was fine. No more rich condition, mileage was back to 14 mpg instead of 8mpg, so i would say that did it. If the diaphragms are sealing the lines shouldn't have fuel running out of them.
