Well, the new head gasket didn't do it. I am coming to the conclusion that the overheat is from the weld in the exchanger. I just think it is blocking too much flow and/or heat exchanger area. So needless to say I am looking for a used front heat exchanger for a 2002 Viper. Anyone know what other models/years exchangers will fit the Viper?

did u bleed the system corectly? are u sure its over heating and not just a short in the wire goin to the sensor or light. my 500 use to do it all the time and it was a wire that was bare. doin the front exchager will be a b**** from what i hear my bortehr blew his and were gonna try to get it welded. im not sure but i think the srx rear exchanger is biger then a viper. try to find a used one and throw that in itll be alot esyer then changing the front exchanger if its not leakin. also check ur coolent pump make sure its pumping. my brotehrs screw backed out and got suced threw the system aafter he replaced it and it ended up makeing it back around latter that year and jaming in the prop. just some ideas to look at or try

yes make SURE that system is bled good before you go changing the front exchanger, it is NOT fun. Also, make sure the wires to your temp sensors aren't broken or shorting out. I had a viper that the temp light would blink every so often and i found a broken wire going to the temp sensor. Soldered it and it was good. Also make sure the wiring harness isn't shorting under the engine. Its a bit of a stretch, but i think its possible one of those wires could be shorting out and doing the same thing. Check everything three times before changing that front exchanger.

What mods are you running? There is no way a small weld would impact the size too much unless it was blocking the coolant from flowing through there, did they check for flow after the weld?

Sled is piped, ran 7000 miles before I had the heat exchanger welded. Heat Exchangers are all warm. I don't think it is a wire because it will consistently come on at the end of the run when doing full throttle lake runs. I think the weld is covering too much of the front exchanger. I would guess it blocks over 1/3 of the exchanger and I am guessing it is just not letting enough coolant through and/or is blocking effective heat exchanger area. The reason I had it welded is because I know you have to pull the motor and track to change it. So again anyone know what years/models will fit so I can look for one?

look at the parts catalog/fiche at www.yamaha-motor.com, you can compare the part numbers of all different models and see what others will fit. I belive all other proactions will fit though.

unless you can weld one, a viper heat exchanger is the only one that will fit. a sx style one will work if you weld a bypass onto the inlet.

i would try the bleed again. if you are bleeding the sled wrong you will not get the air out of it.

let us know what technique you are using

do ya have a rear exchanger?

do ya have a srx rear exchanger in it? If ya dont, that would be way,way easier of a fix, and really with a srx rear heat exchanger and the running board ones, the front isnt a big deal if it WAS partially blocked, would be a heck of alot easier, just a thought.
