First ride of the year tonight on my 02 Viper, which has 4200 miles on it. It's stock except for the 1 1/4" track. When I pinned the throttle, the RPM's would climb up to 8700 or so, and then they'd drop below 8000. They'd fluctuate from 7000-8000. After a many miles, I was finally able to keep it pinned and the problem went away. I'm pretty sure I have a stuck power valve, because my gas mileage was horrible. But, would that cause this RPM problem? I was thinking it was maybe the clutches? Or, would a clutch that didn't shift out cause the peak RPM's to rise, not drop?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not to sound like a smart arse but you answered your own question, now go out and clean the valves and check the cables/valves for pull thrus. Adjust them to the proper spec.

Check out the thread I started about my SRX not hitting the R's it should. I had the same symptoms as you. Sometimes I could get the R's up but most of the time I was short at least 500 RPM's.
Expensive lesson if you have not cleaned the valves regularly. I had one broken cable and the other two cables ripped right out of the valves (wrecking the valves in the process) from them trying to pull the valves open. Not fun at 76 bucks a pop PLUS the broken cable!
NEWS TO EVERYONE...CLEAN YOUR VALVES AT LEAST EVERY 1000 MILES I don't care WHAT OIL YOU RUN!!! (I ran Amzoil since day one)
It's not hard and it's a HELL of a lot cheaper!
TRUST ME!

all i hear about is this expensive oil being best. find it hard to believe. i had a 2000 v-max 700, put on 19,000 plus km's, a 2003 viper, put on 9400 plus km's and now have a 2004 viper with 6600 plus km's and all i ever used was esso semi-synthetic and never had a problem. i ride in temps from +5c to -30 c . have my power valves cleaned once a year along with normal maint. and they hardly ever need much cleaning. does oil price really mean a difference?
