Noobe here and I have been riding my 98 srx 600 for 2 years now. I love the machine but after reading about all of the crank problems I would like to have the update done. When I bought the machine I had the gone through by a local yamaha gooru and he said that the crank has had nothing done to it and that it didn't look bad. What I am looking for is what is involved in updating the crank and who can do it and what is the wallet damage ?

I thought this was only a problem on the 700's

This is what I read in the tech section
[1998 SRX 600/700. All cranks were defective. No exceptions. A "crank program" was initiated, and by now about 99% of the cranks of the 98 600's and 700's are trued and welded. If you are going to buy one of these models, ask anyway if the crank is done or not]

99 SRX 600 Crank
Last year I was able to get my 1999 crank replaced by Yamaha under warranty even though it was 6 years old. They tried to deny that there was a problem until I faxed them a section out of the tech pages of a Yamaha Service manual. My machine kept overheating and I tried everything under the moon until I ran into some others on this board that mentioned that the water pump gear will slip under extreme heat. Good luck. Yamaha paid all parts and I picked up the labor. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Yup as he said, call the dealer and give them your identification number and they can check to see if it has been done in the registry.

Does anyone know where I can find something in writting from yamaha saying that there was a crank problem on all 98 SRX's. My crank has small numbers scribed into one of the counter weights and on my crankcases suggesting maybe a recall number or something. Once I got my crank out I noticed that it had not been welded. I called yamaha and got the run around. The guy said he could only tell me what recalls hadn't been done on my sled and that the crank wasn't listed. I think yamaha should still true and weld my crank if it wasn't done. The person I was talking with at Yamaha said that the crank problem wasn't a recall but an update and that it was only covered if the problem was found within the warranty period of the machine. I think that's BS.

I got the same run around from them last year until I found something in writing. Was your machine overheating? There is an Article in a Tech Tips 2000 book that is put out by Yamaha. I called around and there was a guy at Hackers in Houghton Lake that still had the manual. Call the service dept and have them fax over a copy. It worked for me. Once I had that there wasn't anything they could say about "not knowing about the problem". I would send you my copy but I lost it. oops. Good luck

There was indeed a crank problem with the 98 srx's. the pto cylinder would turn a little and become out of sync with the rest of the crank. The problem seemed to be much more prevalent on the 700's but the 6's wre also being repaired by yamaha. My understanding is the dealer had two repair options. 1. replace the crankshaft with another one. 2. True and weld the original crank. Most dealers went with the second option because of the obvious-the new crank was the same as original so it seemed likely it would do the same thing.
There should be a number engraved or stamped at the pto end of the crankcases to show that the service was performed. At least thats where they engraved a number in both my 600's when they were done.

My 98' has numbers engraved on the crankcases and on the crank itself but it was not welded. I'm not sure what to think. My crank has never spun though. I have almost 13,000 kms on it and it was still true. Only problem I had was a bearing problem on PTO side which may have been caused by a bad crank seal.
