Does anyone know the diffrence between the v-max 500 pri. clutch and an srx700 pri. clutch? the slidding sheeve part number is diff. is it cause the srx clutch have the set screws to hold the pin? any help would be appreciated.

In 2000 Yamaha upgraded the sheaves to thicker castings. This improves strength and resistance to cracking. Most liquid cooled model's use the same sheave's for a given year.
In most cases you swap clutches/sheaves from model to model, just use the correct weights/spring/rollers for your application.
For example, I have a 98 SRX primary clutch that had heat cracked sheave's. The 98 SRX part # for the fixed sheave is 8CR-17611-00-00. The part# for a 02 Viper/SRX fixed sheave is 8CR-17611-01-00. The angles are the same, the difference is the sheave face thickness. If you compare the two side by side when looking at the back side ribs, you can see the 02 sheave is thicker.
What I did was upgrade the 98 clutch, to 00 and later spec's, by using 02 Viper sheave's for a stronger clutch.
I would recommend any pre-2000 YVX clutch that needs sheaves be upgraded. While it's possible for the latter clutch to heat crack around the center hub, it's much more common on the earlier units. It's also a good idea to change both sheave as a set when upgrading.
If you have a fan cooled sled, you have to stay with fan cooled sheave's. This is because the fan cooled motor (Phazer) uses the fixed sheave as a mating surface for the crank seal.
When replacing sheave's, be sure to have the clutch rebalanced. Spin balancing is the best method. I had Wilderness Sport's in Idaho Falls spin balance mine. Cost was $25 plus shipping.

Thanks for the indepth response, i dont mean to sound ignorant, i just dont know a whole lot about clutching. i melted one down and picked one up on e-bay, all the part numbers were the same except the moving sheeve and the only diff. i see is the set screws are on the srx and the v-max didnt use the set screws. I put it back togather last night and work great but i think im gonna ge new sheeves for the srx clutch and use the v-max clutch for a spare. I live within 30 miles from maxx. performance so i talk to gary quite a bit and he has me hooked up pretty good, them guys are great. I really appreciate your imput, and again i dont mean to sound ignorant. thanks a million!

yep, bad enough I was nervious about running it. Thought about using it for a split second, then common sense kicked in, if she gernade's. It be a saftey hazard, as well as get real expensive, real quick.
