Hello, Thanks for taking my question, I have wasted time and money, and Cannot seem to find out where to get, or what the name is of this part. I don't have a picture but I can describe where it is on most yahama sleds from 84-89 (guessing). Picture the external coil that connects your spark plugs, which is bolted to the block, Now from this, there is a wire running down to a black box, this box is sealed shut and is about 1.5" wide and 2.5" long, estimated. Many wires run into this box, I figured it was the internal coil, but just got the part in from dennis kirk and it is an acutal Coil, not this black box i was hoping for.
So again, it is screwed into the body and has numours wires running in it, and mainly a wire (or two) running to the external coil.
My problem by the way is that I cannot get any spark, the sled ran great all last winter then all of a sudden was getting no spark one day. I installed a new external coil and it did not fix the problem. I have been told that it was probaly the internal coil then, but this part I got looks like a plain raw coil with one red wire and I am not sure what to do with it. I was hoping it would be this black box I am talking about because I thought it was the problem, maybe it is not my problem and its my internal coil which I don't know where it goes. Either way I would think its one of these being faulty and not allowing it to spark.
Any info will be great!
Thank you,
Tim

Sounds like the CDI to me. Haven't looked at a phazer for awhile though.

Okay, Thanks! I finally know the name of the part. Next step would be to test it, if it tests good i am guessing it would be my internal coil maybe. They are pretty pricey so I'de really love to test it and see that it is faulty if anyone knows how, I am guessing with a DMM meter device. Then I can send back this internal coil to dennis kirk and look for a used CDI

The internal coil sounds like maybe the stator?!?! As far as I know, the CDI cannot be tested, or if it can, only by the dealer. I would think that if you changed coils already, and the stator on the sled tests ok, than it's the CDI or a broken wire. I don't know the test procedure for the stator, but someone here might.

the part you got that looks like a raw coil is the internal coil for under the flywheel, you have to take off the pull rope assembly, and remove the flywheel, this is where the internal coil is. The black box you refer to is the cdi box.
Now, heres what you must do, you need a digital voltmeter, set on 20k scale on "V", unplug the wire harness coming out of the engine, check with a voltmeter while you have a freind pull the engine over and see if you have varible voltage coming from the stator and internal coil, if you dont, thats where your problem is.
If you do show varible voltage, then go the the wire coming from the cdi box to the coils, check it there while someone pulls it over, if no voltage then cdi box is your problem.
