i just picked up a used 99 sx500, and i cant ride this thing at night, i put a better light bulb in but im not getting enough power to it, if i turn on my brights or handwarmers the tach gauge goes down to 0, and the headlight is very dim. anybody else have these problems and what did u do. thanks

Your light isn't dim, everything else has gotten brighter since 1999.
Unless you've got something wrong, that's pretty much the norm and putting in a brighter headlight will actually make things worse as it takes away power from the rest of your system. If your brightness increases with rpm that machine is operating the same as all mine from that era.
Those are some not so fond old memories that I'd just as soon leave in the past.

yeah, i had a 99 sx 700 and i remember the lighting to be not so good, but this sled has no lighting at all just a dim light u can barely see, plus if i set the hand warmers on or the high beam switch my tach gauge goes down to 0 like its losing power and the dash lights are barely visible, i was just wondering if you could put a more powerful alternator or what ever it gets its power supply from on it. i wanted to see if anyone has done anything to get more power out of it.
I may be that your stator is going or your voltage regulator is about to fail. Have you done a check of your output voltages and currents with the spec? I know the older sleds do not have as brite lights but I'm sure they had enough juice in the system to power the lights and tach at the same time.
