Hello out there I have a 2000srx and I need to adjust the power valves, Can this be done without the test lead to power up the servo motor.

Thanks Joe

Yes No Maybe

Build your own way to power up the servo motor. Sombody listed wiring instructions not to long ago. 12 volt battery, fuse, connectors and a switch will get you there.

or

Start it up use the choke to bring the idle under 900-1000 valves go into self clean mode, set from there.

or

Starting and idling it down does not give consistent results, so don't do it this way.

yes it can be done without the tester.

remove cover from servo, mark one of the cable end holders on the servo back (shows you full closed) start sled let it get to a consistant idle and somewhat warm. lower idle till servo opens and holds itself open while the sled still idles (full open is approx 900 rpms) mark the servo back where it is in the full open position. now you know what is full open and full closed.

now the motor is warm and the valves "should" come out much easier. clean each valve one at a time that way if you mess up you have one more to look at. after all the valves are clean, you are ready to "set" them.

remove the pipes and manifolds. make sure the servo is in the full open position (you will need to turn it counter clockwise to your mark) put your hand into the cylinders one at a time make sure the valves sit flush in the port, not too far out or too far in. flush is what you are looking for. adjusting the cable can be done on the servo side, slide the rubber boots to expose the adjuster and jamb nuts.

when you are happy reassemble the works.

not sure where erikb got his info about consistant results with this method. service manual tells you that the valves go to full open after the idle is moved below 1000 rpms. open is open and closed is closed. my .02 ski

erik b got his comments about consistent results with the idling down method by reading numerous other threads about how to adjust powervalves without the "TOOL".

I was just cliffnoting the information and opinions he would have gotten by doing a forum search on the topic. Personally I use the idle down method, but am going to build my own "Tool" to keep the servo motor energized

i would never leave the servo energized personally, possible burnt servo motor or worse. when i used the tool, i would hook the power to it after each valve was set to verify the servo was still open. that's is where i got the idea to mark the servo so you know what full open and full closed is. no need for tool after you have that info. ski

I got the sharpie out myself when I did mine. It will be interesting to see if it returns to the same place with the "tool" or not. Then I will have first hand knowledge of the cosistency of the idle down method.

The easiest way to make the power tool is to run one black wire and two fused (10 amp) wires, the black wire to ground on 12 volt supply, the other end to the black wire on the sleds servo motor power up lead. The two red wires are connected to the positive of the 12 volt supply, then connect the red wires to the two red wires on the sleds servo motor power up lead. This will open up the servo motor to full open allowing you to adjust you cables.

having problems getting the slack out of the cable with the motor in the closed position. cleaned and adjusted them using the "gap" method in the service manual. i made the gap larger, was less than 2mm, now around 3mm. spec says 2-3.5 mm. problem seems worse. what am i missing??? thanks.

Thanks for all your ideas and thoughts I ordered a test wire for $60.00 and Ill let you know how it works
