I'm pretty close to where I want to be with a Heavy Hitter setup on a strong running stock Viper (fastest of the 15 or so I've ridden). I would like to get a little more top-end out of it if possible though, so I am considering a multi-angle helix that has the bushing ground off to allow overdrive. I am hoping that I can get a little more belt efficiency with a lower finish angle, and along with the extra shift out that I can gain a couple of mph or more.

Here is what I have right now . . .

48.9 gram Heavy Hitter base weights
2.1 gram in the heel
5.0 gram in the middle
3.4 gram in the tip

59.4 total weight

Black Heavy Hitter primary spring (By the way does anyone know the preload, and rate of this spring?)

Stock 47 degree Helix
Yamaha Silver secondary spring @70 degree twist

Stock 22/38 gearing

I am thinking of going with a 49/43, 51/43 or even a 53/43 helix.

Q: What do you guys think? Can I get a little more top end out of it by dropping the finish angle? It seems to have the power to pull it if conditions are optimal. Will the Silver spring cut it or will I need to go to a Pink spring (seems like a big jump if I recall correctly)? At what point do I need to worry about too little side pressure?

Get about a 48/40 advantedge helix & turf that silver spring. Run the red at 80. You will have to lighten up the heel & 1st hole but tip should be close. A lower finish angle will allow you to run less secondary spring cus it grabs the belt better at top end. If you get another brand helix it needs to be about a 52/42 to work the same.

First off thanks for the response Turk!!!

I am not questioning your clutching wisdom at all, as I have seen a long stream of good advice from you over the past years, and trust what you say. I am just wondering if I gave good information, and wanting to double check.

Do you think that going from a Silver secondary spring to a Red one (much lighter) with an extra 10 degrees twist will be too much for my power? I am not running the triple pipes right now, and I have the HH's loaded up quite a bit. I am concerned that the 52 degree initial angle, along with the much lighter spring will let the secondary shift too quick on takeoff.

I am willing to try it, just want to make sure. I don't have any of those helixes on hand right now, so I have to make a purchase or two.

Ding, you've been busy!

The 2 springs in question could be swapped for conditions...top speed running, throw the red in, tight trails, go silver. I think I'd try a green for grins too :)

I hope you've got enough snow to tune on...

Thanks Jason . . .

I was still looking for my old valve spring tester I have buried in the garage somewhere. Not even sure I could have used it even if I found it.

Man guys I tell you what, take good care to write things down, and organize them while you are young. We sure don't get any smarter as we get older, just some of us do a better job of writing things down so we just seem smarter.

Oops I just let the cat out of the bag . . .

Turk, and others

What angle would you guys suggest for this setup with a R3 roller rooster secondary?

I kinda like the 43/39, especially good for off trail stuff too.
