hey guys,i'm gonna be doing some clutches work on my 98 srx and i've never really touched or messed around with snowmobile clutches before i was wondering since most of u seem to really know ur stuff about clutches if i could get a detailed instructions on how to take apart the primary clutch to change the primary spring, weights and rivets along with the secondary sheave and what to how to set up the spring on the secondary and the helix and where to set it properly. I took all ur advice into buying the proper parts for the clutches, i got the 8dn-20's with the 4.5 gram rivets and the yellow silver yellow primary spring and the 51/43 helix and the green secondary spring just need alot of help doing the job is all, i'd be afraid to do it if i didn't have some instruction. It be great help if someone could take the time to help my lame self out.

Y-S-Y is too weak a spring for that sled. Your engagement will be about 3500 rpm...too low. You need the stock primary spring or a w-w-w.

Turk, mmm, I disagree, have you ever tried it? engagement is more like 37-38ish,yellow/silver/yellow works great.

I am ahead of you in knowledge by only about 2 days ;)!
turk has been a great help

i would highly recommend this page on the ty site. it goes through every component and why what works does what it does. tells yo uhow to pull the clutches, and install the new components. I just now finished printing these for reference and to copy to a buddy and then found yoru thread.

I have exatcly what you have , except I have the WWW primary as turk suggests. only problem, all our snow melted and i have to wait two weeks before i can go up north to try it out.
good luck, once you do it, you say.... that was easy......

cluching explainations on totallyamaha

thanks guys

ahhh man i really appreciate the replies was worried i wouldn't get anything, but i'll do my best and let u all know how it turned out just have to wait till i get a few days off work man, were getting snow here and i'm not ready yet. thatks a bunch.

I need more then 3700 rpm to get my azz moving. w-w-w gives me 4200 rpm holeshot with 8dn-20, in a SRX with 15.6 mm rollers.

mrviper700.... Do you figure the Y S Y spring is right for me. I weigh 180lbs or should I use the W W W spring that Turk is suggesting?

you eatin too many donuts too??? lol, just kidding..............

if ya want a higher engagement use the www spring its only a differance of 37-3800rpm with y/s/y to 4200rpm with www.

I like a low engagement for the snow, it helps the sled to hook better and god knows the srx needs all the help it can get, the skidframe is just not that good at transferring weight. But you can pick between the 2 , its no big deal, if you want in between the 2 springs get the y/s/y and add 2 yamaha shims and have a 39-4000rpm engagement, it all depends on how the sled is set up really, if you have awesome traction, more body weight, bigger helix start angle then youll need more, I have run them both ways and its not a big issue. I think everyone is making a big deal out of a very minor thing.
