Hi guy's , new to this forum and I think it's great
I come from Embrun Canada (just east of Ottawa).
I just purchased this viper with only 3200 kms on it. Very clean !
I've done roughly 1,000 kms and noticed that it's harder on fuel (13.5 mpg)
and my top speed is 160 km/hr at best (100mi/hr). Everything on this machine is stock and looks to be in excellent condition.
My question is , would the powervalves cause this problem? I had cleaned them myself but did not adjust them.
Thanks

It could be the power valves. I have a viper that I have had real poor gas milage for over a year and a half. Went all over the sled up and down in and out of Yamaha dealers with my symptoms. At the same time my hand warmers started to work intermittently and gas milage continued to get worse. Until the other day on my way home when I lost my speedometer and rpm gauges. As it got darker I noticed my lights were real dim and when I put throddle down the power valves weren't opening. Anyway to make a long story short it turned out to be my stator. After almost everyone telling me it probably wasn't and no one could take the five minutes to throw on the tester.
Anyway once I have this changed I will let you know about my milage but I am betting this is the answer to my problems.
In your case it is pretty easy to see if your power valves are opening. Follow the cables up towards your handlebars and they all meet in a little box. Remove the cover ( think it is three phillips screws), start the sled, and prop up the rear end. Give it some throttle make sure its over 6000rpms and you should see the cables tighten. If its doesn't happen then your powervalves are probably sticking.
hope that helps

I had the same problem with my Viper. It would only run to about 160kms and it was real hard on gas. I took it back to the dealer where I had it serviced and told them I don't think the power vavles are working. They swore up and told me no way. They took it apart and sure enough one of the valves came apart they said. They fixed it and now it revs to the the right RPM and show about 176kms on th dream meter.
