01 SRX backfiring

I have an 01 SRX with a new top end (approx 200 miles) getting it ready to go for the winter and decided to put the stock exaust can back on. Fired the sled a few times in as many days, well today I fired it and let it warm on the stand and it began to backfire through the exaust at about half throttle. I let it idle down just basically checking it over (the motor) gave it a little throttle and it started popping through the center (#2) carb, hmmm well now. Pulled the air box off, no tears in the boots, carbs are all the way in their boots and tight. Pulled the reeds out none broken but very wet on the bottom reed. Pulled the center plug and soot black not wet but black as hell, plugs are new. The motor was redone end of last winter and ran a bit of break-in period but everything ran excellent with no trouble whatsoever. The motor has a mild trail port with stock jetting, stock pipes, stock reeds etc. The only other thing that has been replaced is the TPS, however that was replaced at the same time the motor was rebuilt and didn't show any signs of trouble. I believe I got the adjusting instructions for setting the TPS here. Anything come to mind for this backfiring/popping?

It doesn't look it but it could very well be. I've had 5 different SRX's and never ran into this problem. I did have a plug that would show spark out of the cylinder, but when you put it in and tighten it down it wouldn't fire, that pipe would be as cold as can be. We'll give it a shot. ;)!

Well that would be a very good reason, but, the can has been on a shelf in my shop from the time I took it off and the sled sits in a new 4 place enclosed Sno Pro. I have seen some sleds where those little buggers have created some real problems. I'm gonna try new plugs again, and if that doesn't do the trick I'll pull the pipes and try another stock can that I have out there. It's just weird, the carbs were very clean when I took them off (cleaned them again anyway) I put in new plugs when I brought it in the shop, (from the trailer) and it's been running oh I guess 3 or 4 times and I pulled the seconday off to install a new bushing put it back on and fired it up, warmed it up on the stand, spun the track around and it started this backfiring

do a compression test. i know you said it was just rebuilt but any thing can go wrong low compression can caus a back fire so can a broken piston skirt

Yup thats a good idea...I looked at the skirts from the reed side with a flashlight and they looked good. While I'm this far in though I'll pull the pipes and look from that side. To pull it over, there seems to be good compression, but I think you're right a compression should be done to be sure. And I bypassed the TORS just to eliminate that possibly

And if that don't work it's >>>>>>>>> :die:

I think he is nuts already, and add that fact he has a gazillion SRX's, he is even more nuts. Truth be told, the man is crazy about those sleds, so help him out boys.

John, called you twice about Jackman. Where the hell are ya? 20 of us going Feb 8th-12th. Call them, make a reservation, get on board.

Jimmy Allen

BTW: The Viper ER is real nice.

My buddies 1999 SRX this year pulling it out of storage did the same thing it backfired so bad it blew the pipe off. Turns out that from the fogging it fouled 3 plugs and i noticed that he did not tighten the spark plugs that tight. With new plugs somtimes you need to tighten them a little more because of the washers on the sparkplugs. After the third set i told him not to hit the throttle for at least 10 minutes and let it warm up good and burn all the fog out. And he has about 1500kms this year and no backfiring since. :yam:

Hey Jimmy how the hell are ya. Na, this ones got be baffled, but, could be as simple as a bad plug. As the saying goes look at the easiest thing first. And I did, it's just that the #2 plug wasn't wet, oily or anything that you'd consider fouled. But, we're gonna put it back together cause everything else looks fine. Oh by the way, me nuts, maybe slightly but a gazillion SRX's, just a tad under. Jackman, yes, I'll call Deb and see what she's got for that time. They'll be no trail pounding for me again this year, my arm is still junk. At least one maybe two more operations and it's suppose to back where I have strength. Problem is the docs told me that after this operation it'll be three months or more before I can use it to any degree. I was going to have it fixed in August but I was just to busy with work, and I certainly can't do it now. But thanks for the kind words and tell all them boys up there I said hi and I'll see you guys up in Jackman
