Budget Mods to my SX700R

I need advise and suggestions.

I am looking to give my 2000 SX700r some performance mods for aggressive trail riding. I am a backyard mechanic that can do some of the job myself. I don't have the knowledge of jetting and clutching to be comfotable making sure these areas are tuned properly.

This is what I was thinking:

1. Stock Silencer Mod (Cutting 2 inch hole) - I can do this
2. Install reed spacers (Father-in-Law is machining a set of these for mine and possibly my wifes SX700r.)
3. Gasket Mod to one layer.
4. Either 51/43 helix or Benders clutch kit for standard SX700r
With the other mods, does this change the requirements for the bender clutch kit?
5. Clutch weight changes as per turks suggestions. 4,5g and 3.1g on standard weight.

6. Possibly the air box mod.

If I do all these mods, how do I know the clutching is setup properly, and if the jetting is tuned properly? Does anyone have experience with doing all these mods with a stock Sx700r?

Any jetting and clutch suggestions would help me tremendously.

Also how do I figure out if the shocks need to be rebuilt? The sled has 3800 miles on it and still seems to ride fine. Compared to new sleds, the suspension appears to sit low.

In NY they are cutting down on sound in a big fat 250.00 way. I would not mod my can if I was in your shoes. I did it 3 years ago on my 2001 SXR-700 and you don't get any noticeable power increase (i'll swap you my 2" drilled oem can for yours if you want. It's got 1 winter on it). You do get a noticeable increase in sound, not a lot but enough to get their attention. DO NOT GET the Bender clutch kit. I got one, paid 210.00 and I got a spring and a helix. Nice, a primary spring for 100.00. Use the clutching specs from the tech pages. If you need reliability do not do the gasket mod at all (It's good for 1000 miles at best, then rip it down and do it again or your looking for trouble). You will get a noticeable crack of the throttle increase but you will have issues with the single gasket. Others will tell a different story but I have been down that road as have so many others. I would also stay away from the reed spacers. I ran them for 3 years and even if you move your motor and re-shim your secondary, your carbs will hit your steering column. They all do there is no way around it. I notched mine this year (FREEBIE) and it works just as well. I know your having a set made up but I would really think twice about it. Your best mods are going to be clutching it, notch the reeds and get the power to the ground. Also put a 20 tooth top gear and get rid of the 23 tooth that is in there (you will also need a 68L chain). That will give you a top speed of 101 on paper. Also, put a 1.25" ripsaw and Bender TS-3 transfer rods on that thing and you will think you bought a new sled. Thats it and you will have a fast reliable sled. Doug
 
I have some clutching you can try on the SX-R that will work great with all the mods you are going to use....but all will have to be done minus the airbox mod.

Don't do the airbox mod, it messes things up. I have spacers, and my carbs don't hit anything and the motor is mounted right where it was from the factory. As for the head gasket mod, no sense getting in a pi$$ing contest over it, but I have seen sleds with 5000 miles on a single layer gasket and no problems. Best option is to gety a peak head with proper cc domes for your area, and run stock head gaskets. Maxdlx

It sounds like the air box mod is not worth it. As long as the reed spacers fit on, I will be trying that when I take the carbs out this summer for cleaning.

I agree clutching and tuning the carbs is probably my best answer to improve performance. With some of the advise on this site, it seems like I can get the clutching and tuning close to what I need, so it seems like I can do the job myself. I just don't want to learn that I did something wrong by blowing a piston, or getting 80 miles out, and the jetting is off. NY is very consistant for elevation so I just need to get it right for 15 to 20 degree weather. There are not to many places to sled in NY or the east coast that jetting changes very much.

I have Bender, Maxximum Performance, and Pioneer Performance all within 1 1/2 hours of my house. Is it worth taking a sled to this type of shop for mild performance clutching, and tuning? They probably would try to sell me their parts, so that probably is a dumb question.

I would expect the Exhaust mod to work because air flow is less restricted. Does anyone else have an opinion on the exhaust mod. At this point NY doesn't have decibal testing equipment so as long as the Exhaust looks stock, they are not going to ticket me. From what I hae heard, they will ticket you if the exhaust has pipes or a can that is not factory. Around houses, I respect the owners and keep the noise as low as possible, but once I am out a 1/4 mile from the houses, I will ride hard, not dumb.

i have a 600 and want to do some stuff to it ......have you thought about shaving weight ?....i think that is one thing i want to do ........lighter mass will give it more acceleration and speed i bet ......just a suggestion......i am gonna do the light weight rotor & hub, lighter can, lighter skis, maybe lighter trailing arms, possibly take off parking brake, and lighten up my skid through mountain performance with the billit aluminum skid rails.........i thought the air box mod would be good because it alows the engine to breathe better.....oh and maxximum performance is like 10 mins from where i live they have some good performance mods call and ask for gary drum and get their 2004 mod book.....some good stuff in there

Since My SX700r is almost 5 years old, I don't want to buy alot of mods that will only be good for this sled. I would rather purchase a new sled down the road and put money into it. In a couple years I will look into a new four stroke, but till then, my sled is great.
