Got to doing the head gasket mod on my dad's XTC 700 this afternoon. As you can see by the pics, there was a little rust in between the layers of the gasket. I cleaned them up the best I could after they were peeled, and sprayed the gasket stuff on them and threw them back in. (It has 3000 miles on it.)

The heads back on right now, but I'm wondering if what 3 layers of gasket compensated for might be a problem for just one gasket? There was light rust on the black gaskets that I fear may not seal.

I told my dad, if I put anti freeze in it and fire it up and there are no leaks, we should be golden, but if not then we'll have to pop it apart and do it again.

What do you guys think should I just get new gaskets for it and peel them?

$100 for new gaskets is kind of spendy .... should I take the gamble and try running the old gaskets or just spend the money now rather than after she melts down from anti freeze squirting in the cylinder?

I've been there and it seems new gaskets now would be less expansive than a piston and jug?? :o|

Oops, should have put this in the non power valve ones, oh well, gaskets a gasket - right guys? Thanks in advance for your unput!

Just get new gaskets and save yourself the worry and potential problems and extra work down the line. I beleive you have already came to the conclusion..

How do you keep all the cooling fluid from going into the cylinders when you pull the head?, and after you put it back on, how does the sytem prime itself. Just wondering as iv only worked on all fan cooled motors so far.

Yea, that's kind of the way I was leaning too - I pulled the coolant hose off the head and tipped the sled on it side to drain down the coolant.

Not sure how it primes itself, just have to raise the front of the sled and fill it back up slowly I guess. Hopefully no air bubbles when you're done.

I guess I was hoping somebody would tell me not to worry about it!

Thanks fellas.

I wouldn't be to worried about it. The rust should wipe off of the gasket, spray it 3 times letting it dry between coats. New ones can leak too. Maxdlx

maxdlx - what is the deal with changing jets? I got two of them changed - must have been by luck - but I couldn't get that last one, now I dropped the dang jet into nowhere land. I've got the whole rack of carbs off and loose, but I think the needle is keeping me from getting it started. Is there an easier way? - oh, and my jet wrench I thought would work is the wrong kind so I'm trying to get them started with a needle nose!

You wouldn't worry about the gaskets, huh? I don't know, I suppose if I keep an eye on the antifreeze level and spark plugs, maybe .... is there a way to tell if it's leaking into the cylinder even the least bit? I suppose from where the rust is they would probably leak outward anyway, huh?

Thanks maxdlx,

mike / xs

take the bowl off and try it. The rust on the top layer should wipe clean with little effort. Maxdlx
