Hello all,
I am looking at buying this sled. Can someone confirm the year? Its listed as a 92.
Anything I should look out for when I go take a look? No mechanic by any means!
It has a new track and bearings. From the pics, looks like its in nice shape for the year.
Also, sled has about 8000 miles, but I hear the motor is pretty bulletproof. Any additional info would be great!!
Thanks!

I would have guessed 91-92 - def not 93.

Looks like a 1991, could be a 1992. Def. not a 1993. I had a '93 and the graphics were much different. It was a great sled, I loved it. I got rid of mine with about 8000 miles on it. Never had any major issues with it, but it was starting to need a few things, like a track and some new drive wheels, but it had served me well. As long as it's running well you should be happy.

It is a 1992 in the LE model (dk. green). They had electric start. I know, I owned one. Sorry to say it was my worst Yamaha sled to date. I only had it one season and traded it for my 1993 Exciter II SX. Don't get me wrong. The sled was reliable. I am kind of a performance buff. This sled would not respond to any mods. I tried several pipes, porting, clutching etc. I found out later from Pat Hauck (whom was an EXCITER expert at the time) that the CDI box was the culprit. If you run a pre-Exciter II CDI (1987-1990) you can do these type of mods with better success. I owned a 1990 before the 1992 that had Pat's port job and stock exhaust mod done to it. That sled was incredibally strong. It would outrun a twin piped Exciter of it's time including many other muscle sleds of that era. The only reason I bought the 1992 was because a friend of mine bought a Yamaha dealership and I wanted to give him some buisness.

Yup it's a 92. I had one. I liked it, and it treated me well. I blew a piston in it, but it was my fault for leaning it out too much. That was the only time it was on the end of a rope. Biggest gripe with it was snow ingestion in powder conditions that would freeze the throttle bodies. Another thing I was told to watch for was the clutch wearing out causing a vibration and frothing the fuel in the float bowls. That could cause a lean condition.
I sold mine with 6000 miles and it was still very solid.

Sure looks like it...looks like black in the pictures. I can't go see it until the weekend.

Yeah it was a dark metallic green but would look black, blue, dark purple depending on light conditions. It was a fun sled, but as Yammerhead stated the clutch was the problem on mine. It was great until about 5000 km then i chewed a belt and had problems with the cltuch from that day on. Had it to a couple of dealers and they couldn't figure it out. It was either 40 km/hr or wide open, anything in between was really boggy and would suck back the fuel. Lots of fun to ride though.

How was the suspension? I mean, I know its a 92 and won't be in the same ballpark as my Panther...but was it jarring on the back and horrible, or pretty decent for the year?
I'll ask the guy about the belts and how many he has gone through in the recent years. He is away this week, thats why I cannot see it right away....but he is answering his e-mails.
Thanks again!

I didn't mind the suspension. It worked pretty well for that time. It's not quite like the suspensions of today, but that being said it was really good at the time IMO. Like I said, those were my only problems (clutch & gas consumption). I had 4 other friends that rode exciter's and liked them very much also. It was also my first yamaha so it holds a special something for me. All my buddies talked and swore by Yamaha and that was the sled that pulled me in. Now all i do is talk about the reliability and performance of Yamaha!!!

Yep on the changing colors....
Those early YXR primarys were not quite the deal yet at the time. They had white plastic removeable sliders that slid along the towers for the sliding surface that caused binding. In fact the SX had it too. I ran a Comet on my SX. In 1995 they redesigned the YXR with new black buttons. Much better clutch. Also the new Reverse cam secondary came out in 1995 too.
