Friend has a 02 viper 3000 miles and just started to over heat on the last ride. Stop let cool and its good for 5 to 7 miles then light comes on. We have checked for leaks, etc. talked to the local yamaha dealer they printed out the sheet from yamaha on overheating. We are riding in somewhat marginal snow but my vector doesn't come close to overheating. The sheet says it could be his skid plate causing the problem so he is going to remove it and he also going to add another cooler. My question is has anyone had problems with the water pump and if so what was the problem and the cure. Thanks Sam

My 03 Viper was no different, adding the rear heat exchanger fixed the problem. If you know your are going thru an area without much snow, he can pack the running boards with snow to get your through without overheating.

Dont Take The Plate Off , It Needs A Rear Exchanger For Low Snow Conditions , Find A Srx Or Mt Max Exchanger Used On This Site And You Will Be All Set ...

I know this sounds wierd...Last year I had the light come on a few times myself...
Stopped...Kicked snow on the footrest(side headexchangers) etc...We were riding in the rough stuff so we tended to ride a little slower...it kept coming on...I kind a got fed up and Gripped it and ripped it...and kept on turning the handle bar left and right(to kick up snow)...the light never came back on...I've often heard Yammies need to be put through a little harsher riding..no pampering....I installed a rear exchange this year just incase...

A set of ice scratchers will help (A LOT), while riding on hard pack.

im overheating also and cant figure it out why, i have the bender opticool headgasket and the rear heat exchanger and its spitting out the coolant threw the overflow, then afterwards i got to put about 1.5 litres of fluid to top it off.

Water Pump Seal is blown
If your Viper is overheating and you are losing coolant I will bet dollars to doughnuts that your water pump seal is blown. This wa sa common problem and there are service bulletins about it. Yami covered mine on warranty twice. If that is not it, it may be low snow conditions, as others pointed out. Or you may simply need to bleed the system. But, I maintain that if you are losing coolant, this is the place to start.

mine never overheated until i stetched it to 136... then the first couple of rides it did, i added a MPI rear cooler (this thing is huge for stretched tracks) and no problems since, although i think it was just improperly burped and had an air lock somewhere, adding the cooler was just smarter....
the rear cooler removal to save weight on a viper was a silly move, but oh well, just like the engine torque limiter.....
