We have 3 Mt. Vipers - The 2003 Viper just developed a loud banging noise or backfiring noise. It was running great for a couple of hours then just cut out. It has bender pipes. We have changed the plugs - We were able to drive the sled out however It ran poor at low rpms and when in ideal it sounds like it make a puttering noise.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks

Dirty Pilot jets, or iced pilot jets. What do the plugs look like when you pull them. Maybe one isn't fireing, and it is popping in the pipe. Maxdlx

Mine did the same thing 2 seconds before I took the top off the center piston
just last friday...... got ice in the jet and wasn't running opticool or extra exchanger so my bad!!!! Live and learn through the old pocketbook. I'm also running bender pipes with clutch mods.

The center plug was much more dirty. The night before the air box was completely iced over, we pulled it and dried it. Some water must have gone into the carbs.

Did you put in new jets? What is opticool?

sounds like you need to clean out those jets good all three it's probably only one but be safe......... Opticool is a head gasket from Bender that redirects flow through the cylinders for more optimum cooling......

I had the same problem last month you need to clean out you carbs and change your jetting.

We got into the backfire problem some more - We blew up the center piston. The two outside ones are fine. MPI thinks possible cause from running to hot or running two fast down roads below elevation and getting to hot. Live and learn.
