on my 98 srx, when I pull the brake it makes a thumping sound, is this the belt, or something else? I can hear the belt a little at 60mph making the noise like when you have a low spot. any help would be appreciated.

brake thump
with the information you have posted i would suspect either driveshaft bearings or jack shaft bearings. it could also be a worn keyway on the brake rotor at the jack shaft. you didn't say if you noticed if the brake handle pulsed. if it does the problem has to be related directly to the brake and then i would concetrate on looking at those components. hope this at least gives you a starting point.

brake
the brake works just as good as any other srx I have tried. It just thumps when you pull the brake lever. Sounds almost like when a car has a flat going down the road.

bearings, belt. loose chain....hard to say

Thump
Is the noise the Primary or secondary clutch slamming when you hit the brake?

brake
definetly not one of the clutches, I know what that sounds like. Its just a low bumping/thumping sound when I pull the brake. I'm going to change the belt and see what happens. Has this ever happened to ne one?

I took the belt off and the secondary can turn quite a bit. It has alot of slack, it can turn about 2-3 inches. I am thinking loose chain. If so how do i tighten it?

Lose Chain
On the front of the chaincase (toward the front of the sled), there should be about a 11mm bolt going into the chain case. It is being help in place by a nut tightened to the case itself. Losen the nut , and Tightening the bolt (Clockwise will tighten the chain). Then tighten the nut again.
