The Phazer carburation had a lean spot above idle and into midrange. The idle mixture screws normally have to be set rich to compensate for an off-idle lean spot or bog on acceleration.
About in the late 90's Yamaha offered a kit to correct this. Apparently the new sleds had the carburation changed to correct the problem and the kit was offered for all the older sleds. I learned about the kit at that time in a magazine notification that was from Hartman Inc of Idaho.
I have always thought about installing one, but am concerned about the possibility of losing fuel mileage. I installed a larger pilot jet at the time a cold air package was added but the kit apparently has other parts (I remember the kit as being about $55.00). The sled has no other performance modifications and there has never been an engine problem from running too lean. Much of my riding is done at trail speeds on twisty, lower speed trails. I would rather continue to live with a little low end lean condition and hesitation than to lessen the fuel range.
Has anyone added the kit to a Phazer? If so, what were the components? What kind of effect did it have?

Check out this link from the tech pages. you may also want to call tom hartman and ask him about the carb mod(very nice guy and always willing to help). I believe that there is some drilling to be done into the carb body to add fuel to the mid range circut. This was done to my sled by the previous owner.

I had talked to Hartman about it a few years ago and did not get a lot of information other than the price. I will call him again for more info. I was hoping to find someone who was able to compare performance and fuel mileage without the modification and then with it.
Thanks much phazer95.

What kind of fuel mileage do you get out of it now? I've heard people say 160 kms/tank, and I think that is reasonable. I've yet to test mine to the max, but I think I'm close to that figure if not better.

Fuel mileage and range is a big factor to me and I don't want it to drop from where it is now. It originally got 13-15 miles per gallon (sorry, you'll have to convert to kms) and after adding a cold air package and modifying it to completely block off underhood air, it got 15-18 mpg. In recent years with high mileage and probably being out of tune, it has dropped to 13-15 again. Normal range is about 120 miles per tank. I always reset the tripmeter after filling and use it to tell fuel level and always fill it full right to the brim, I figure it will be that much less further I will have to walk if I run out.. Once had a 1978 Ski-doo free air with a single Mikuni that got 20 mpg minimum. I also have a 500 Venture that is a real pig - sometimes only 8 miles per gallon.

Hey PZ 1
I would think the Venture to be a little better than that. I have a 96 Venture 480 TF. I can fill it to the brim and drive it hard on the trails with some lake runs mixed in and get 170KM to a tank. Granted I have lightened the sled somewhat by going to a single rider setup, but she wasn't that bad last year with 2 up arrangement. What year is your Venture?
