Besides the factory Ohlins with extensions, what are the other options for front shocks on an SRX? Is it possible to use a Viper front end?

joe, I don't know if this helps but I purchased the front shock adjustable mount from...
hauck Adjustable front shock mounts for stock style shocks
HSRX-ASM
Our Price:$49.95
http://www.hauckpowersportsinc.com/clearancedetails_1191_1.aspx
and I'm running the shock as low as I can get it.....last year I added viper rear shocks to the srx and was going to install front viper shocks but...after looking at it...you can't just mount viper shocks in the front. they won"t fit right.... Personaly I think the shock mounts are the best solutions for short money and this gets the job done. also don't be afraid of no revalved viper shocks....I put those on mine and I think they rock....I don't think I have been to the bottom of the suspension since changing them.
just my opinion... hope this helps.....

SRX shocks

I have revalved Viper shocks in the rear skid already. They work great. Pioneer Performance has a special valving for the Viper shocks when used in the SRX. In the front I have the factory Ohlins with the extensions and the adjustable Maxximum shock bracket. I am running the shocks on the lowest mounting. The front end is great. I have it set out to about 42 inches.

I was just wondering if there was a better set-up possibly using Viper shocks. I know someone has done this before. I am setting up another SRX for a friend of mine and we are deciding on finding a set of Ohlins and extending them or ????????????????????

if u put viper or any otehr long travel shock( the shocks with the Y on the top) u need to take ur shock mount off the bulkhead. should be 2 bolts one that bolting into the bulkhead ynder where the shock mounts and one up top under the hood where it bolts threw the cast part of teh bulk head. the u ahve to replace the spacer in the top with a ruber buching from a viper. after that u have to get a set of sxr, viper or XTC radius rods and steering rods. then u have to replace the sway bar with a 42 inch sway bar. has a purple indication mark on it. after that ull be long travel up front. its around 250 in all new parts maybe 100 if u can find some one parting out an sxr or viper. u may be able to get away with using ur stock radius rods but in my opnion i wouldnt cause u ahveto thred them out about a cm or 2 and ive had my lower rod pull right off of the ball joint(tirod) at the end and its just more work u have to do casue it strips bolth.

I would use the ohlins with extensions and adjustable shock mounts over viper shocks any day. Ohlins are GREAT shocks.

srx wide kit

I sent my Viper shocks to Pioneer where they revalved and changed the shafts to ones with eyemounts. I also run Max perf wide front-end kit. I am very happy with this setup, but I can't really compare it to the extensions on the Ohlins. I know it works much better than the short travel ohlins I had previously.

Viper shocks

Thanks LEEKO! Thats what i wanted to know. I gues Bruce can change the shafts for me. How much did it run? I think that the Viper shocks are longer than the Ohlins ( with extensions ) and should give more travel????? The Ohlins are better quality, but the Viper conversion sounds like it might be woth it also.

Is it necessary to swap longer control rods, radius rods, and sway bar if you want to use Viper shocks on the front of an SRX. It makes sense, but is it needed or can you go without and just run the shocks without modifying it. It seems like about a 50/50 jury on the subject from the archives (search: long travel). Just wondering how crucial it is to rearrange the whole front end. Thanks in advance.

I'm running RX-1 shocks on my SRX, but I have a 44 inch wide front end kit on it. I have a set of floats waiting to go in when I get some time. The RX-1 shocks had to be modified to fit into my Hauck adjustable mounts.

JJ,
I can't remeber exactly what I spent. I think $250-300, but I also bought the 2.3 straight rate springs. It is definitely longer travel than the OHlins with ext.. I really like the setup, much better than the short travel ohlins, but my viper with Ohlins is still better.

EJ,

I tried my RX-1 fronts first by grinding the mount down. I thought is was going to work perfect until I aligned and tightened everything up. The shocks ended up being to long and the steering arms bottomed in the bulk head at full extension...that is why I had to use my Viper shocks.

EJ,

I have the Max perf. wide kit set at 43". It really sucked because I ground the mounts down on the RX-1 shocks and in mock up mode it was fine. I did this in the summer and basically couldn't get to it until this winter. This is when I realized I couldn't get it to work, so I had to work with the other shocks.

Let me know how the Rx-1 shocks work? I thought this would be a hot setup with the wide kit. I also wonder if I would have gone a little wider, the clearance may have been there. When it was in mock mode I didn't have the heim joints screwed in as much.
