short spring vs. long spring

I've got a '99 Vmax 700. For my current set-up the stock primary spring (short WSW) works best. I have one of those trick-looking 911 Response Kit anodized primary covers that I'd like to try but they only work with the long primary springs (they used to sell a spacer for short-spring models but they don't carry them anymore). What I'm wondering is whether I could just order a Yamaha long spring with the same spring rate. I looked on the sheets in the tech section and the WSW short has the same rate as the WSW long. Can anyone advise me one way or the other on whether I can just substitute the WSW long spring for my WSW short and use the 911 cover and still be about the same on engagement and any other variables?

yes that method should get you real close. The springs with the same preloads and rates should actually the same, i just can't personally tell you how the 911 cover will affect it. I know they are supposed to improve efficiency and therefore boost rpms. Can add weight if your revs are higher than they were before the cover.

Thanks, yamaholic. I figured as much. I was in the process of replacing some stuff with fresh components and have a brand new short WSW. I'll pick up a new long WSW and then I can do a back-to-back comparo of short WSW / stock cover versus long WSW / 911 ER cover. I was creeping up a little on top before and wanted to start over with fresh springs before continuing to add weight. Can hardly wait to try this...the sled is a rocket (quite a few mods). I can hardly wait to try it against my newly acquired '03 RX-1 shorty with ECP and Ripsaw.

Thanks, Maxdlx. I have both springs now and am eager to try both set-ups. However, testing by the house has been complicated by the fact that winter went AWOL in southern NB and I've spent every riding opportunity trucking 1.5-2 hours and using the RX-1. That and when servicing the primary I noticed one clutch weight hanging up (feels kinda stiff in its boss...doesn't drop freely like the other 2). I cleaned a bit and will try new washers, but need to look into this a little more closely. Quite weird I thought. I took out the bolt and metal bushing...no significant friction there. And since the bosses and the weight thickness can't magically change, I figure there's gotta be an issue with dirt build-up or the washers. Seemed weird that all of a sudden that one would get so tight. Anyone else see this before?
