I am a first time sled buyer and need some advice. A buddy has two 95 vmax 600's for sale. What are the upsides and downsides to this model. I am mostly intereted in trail riding. I know it does not have much for rear suspension travel, but since I am new and they are going for a good price should I overlook this? Since there are two machines, I am only buying one, what are some things to look for when deciding which machine to buy? What were some available options? Any help or comments from previous owners would be great.

Options..

Electric start, Reverse on that sled. Im sure it has hand + thumb warmers (maybe check they work)

Check your wear items: track, bogey wheels, hyfax etc.
Be sure the tunnel is straight and has not been tweeked, check for heat exchanger damage (fins ubove track)

check clutch operaton, rollers etc.

If you can... RIDE IT!!

overall apperence of sled will tell a lot i think too

My wifes 95 600LE has been a very good machine. We have had it since new. 4500+ miles now. Alittle on the big side (the machine not the wife ;). but smooth and dependable. The addition of an extra wheel set will help the slides last alot longer. My selling dealer insisted on installing them before he would even sell the unit to me.
While is does have the short travel rear suspension it works just fine for trail riding.
A 96 XT rear skid is on Ebay which would be a great up grade.

Do you want to see any pictures of the machine(s)? I got lots.

Check those "pogo stick" front shocks for dings and dents... if there are any dents in them (from bumping a tree or something) they will wear out sooner...

Like it was stated above... if you can, take both for a ride.

Nice machines very dependable and fast, just down in the suspension area

I love my old iron;

I am in Grand Rapids, MN. Thanks for the help. The seller lives near a lake, so I can take them for a ride. The seller is a buddy and he said one is faster than the other, but it has 600 more miles than the other. Hope to ride them within the next two weeks.

well let us know what one you pick up....dont really matter about how many miles its about how well they were looked after..

What would the 96 skid give me? How much difference was there between the 95 and the 96 rear suspension and would it all bolt up or require some modifications?

The XT skid will give you more rear travel and a better ride. Yes it is a bolt in BUT you have to do some measuring and drilling of the tunnel to mount it.

SRV540, if you like the 96XT here some action shots.
