there is a service bulletin on all triple yamaha's that came out in 01 or 02. i had this problem with my 99 srx 700. it calls for removing the impeller shaft bolt and using red or blue loc-tite on the threads with a new washer/gasket. turned out i needed a new mechanical seal. cost me about 200.00 can. installed at local yamaha dealer.

by the way, this is best left to a qualified mechanic with the proper tools. i have seen people make quite a mess of everything trying to get the mech. seal out!!! and get the new one in and still leak. this happened to me. live and learn!!!

I have done several of them and it isn't too bad if you know what you are doing. But i guess for the price that you can take it to a dealer if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself you can just take it in. But yes, i have never seen the oring for the cover fail, always been the mechanical seal in the ones that i have seen. No reason the cover oring should fail.

mine leaked into the bottom end and killed all the bearings, now i got a different engine. too much $$$$ to fix the old
