Sled is a 97 V Max 600 XTC. After running it on the stand till the heat exchangers are warm, maybe 5-7 minutes running at fast idle (turned up the idle screw) with the occasional blip to 4 or 5000 to make the track run I get these numbers:
Old piston and rings: 106 psi
New piston and rings: 109 psi
I didn't check it cold... figured no one runs cold anyway.
so they are only 3 psi off... that's only about what, 3% difference? Sled has ~3600 miles on it... but it had the 97 V Max piston update so best guess on they mileage for the old piston is about 2500 miles.
Sound o.k. to you guys??

they are pretty close to each other, and for all you know maybe that gauge just reads a little low. I'm sure its fine.

Yeah, I don't think these numbers are too out of line for a warm motor

There low foul from what a 6 twin should be,,
but like holic said there at least close to each other.

What would "good" compression numbers be for a twin? Would that apply to a 96 600.....
I've been kicking around the idea of checking mine....

Oh boy. I know I won't get that on my sled. My motor has been re-ringed but not by me so I know they have some miles on them. Sounds like a job for next summer....I'd be able to pull the motor/cylinder and head and take that home to work on right?

Do your test and post back,,
We run a lot of old iron from that year '94 to '96
and thats what we always see,,our sleds are very well
matained and all stock, and not beat on.

From Memory, the old one cold (a few weeks ago) measured around 120... and the new one cold (2 minutes after bolting it back up) measured around 123 or 125 or so.
