Which is the proper way to vent the carbs:
Let the hoses hang (factory style)
Vent them to the handlebar area
Vent them to the airbox
Just wondering since the sled I picked up 1997 700SX
has them vented to the airbox and I think that might have contributed to the meltdown.

Let the vent tubes hang down under the carb rack in the stock position. That burndown was definately lean. 143ish main jets are OK at anything above +20 but airbox venting would definately negate that.

If I make my own vent tubes do they need to be exactly like the ones above?

no they don't, just as long as they are vented outside of the air box. Maxdlx
