I cant quite figure out why the temp icon on the lcd and the warning light on my 02 viper are flashing. It only flashes once in awhile but when it does come on it usually flashes in patterns of 6. I have tested the temp sensor on the top of the motor, replaced the thermostat, even pulled apart the water pump to check the impeller, and bled out the system (following the correct procedure). I live in the UP where there is plenty of snow on the trails and have never had a problem with overheating in the past so a rear heat exchanger is not necessary. The sled does not appear to be overheating as the heat exchangers are warm as though it is circulating. I brought it to the local yamaha dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with the cooling system and they couldnt get the lights to flash. I took it for a long ride after picking it up from the shop went over a snowbank and the lights began to flash again. Electrical short? The sled only has 1500 miles on it.. Where should i start looking? Anyone have this problem before?

I checked the wire, no sign of discoloration or corrotion. I installed a rear heat exchanger and im still getting 8 flashes or continuous light from the temp icon and warning light? Anything else I can check?

had the exact same problem with my 02. 8 flashes means "short, disconnected, unplugged" found that mine was the plug that plugs into the temp sensor on top of the head was loose. fixed it so it has a good tight connection, problem gone. hope this helps

I jsut fixed a similar problem with my oil level sensor. check the wires from the sensor to the dash board. they all run under the engine and may rub thru. My rub turned out to be against the carb fuel line clamp. take the air box out and take a close look.
good luck.

good luck.

Still Flashing
I replaced the thermosensor on the head like you said, bled out the system, and its still flashing...
So far i have:
Replaced thermostat
Replaced thermosensor
Added bender rear heat exchanger
Took apart and inspected water pump
Sometimes it flashes or sometimes its on continuous
Ive been riding it with it flashing cause we just got tons of snow, hasn't blown up yet! but it would be nice to have it working when it actually does overheat so i dont get stranded somewhere
I appreciate the input guys

The manual in the tech pages shows that the sensor is bad or there is a short circuit. I would start tracking wires and testing contivity of each wire starting at that sensor.

I agree...start pulling wires..look for a short(rub through).

Look in the wire diagram for the color code and it will help narrow down what color wire is the problem, or just look at the other end of the sensor connector. Check for shorts or opens before you touch the harness. Disconnect connectors at the hood hinge that should isolate the wires under the engine. Then move the harness a bit to see if anything changes.
If you find a problem, you can see the whole under engine wiring harness without removing the engine. Take out the air box, the exhaust and loosen the wire harness hold downs. unclip the connectors by the hood hinge and you can pull the harness up, while pushing at the bottom of the motor. See if the electrical tape is worn off and look at the insulation on the wires there. pay special attention to your color. You might find the problem.
