I used the Ultimax 3 belt. The guy who from where I bought my pipes from told me the Ultimax 3 belt will make her go faster.

I have always run Dayco and they worked great, until
I piped it and started going out west
this year I switched back to Yamaha 8dn and have run it all year so far with 1 west trip in Jan. Last 2 years I used 2-3 belts

The stock belt might be expensive, but it will last much longer.

Ultimax3's always worked good for me there softer than yamaha belts!
I just had a yamaha belt blow on me this weekend with 600 miles on it. Is this normal? I thought I heard of these belts lasting 1000+ miles on the vipers without a problem.

The sled was stored for 2+yrs before I purchased it. The sled had just under 500 miles on it when I bought it, so maybe that had something to do with it. The top layer came off after a 1-2mile speed run (open trail). It's still usable(not really), but it's only half the orig thickness.

Only the yamaha belt. I smoked at least 8 ultimax 3 belts with my stock 600 last year in a total of maybe 1200 miles. Thats about 150 miles per belt...lame. Havent had a single problem with the yami one this year with my viper, 700+miles and counting.

No problem, just didn't want everyone to get confused.

The 8DN belt is a very hard belt and thus more durable, but needs more side pressure. The other belts are softer and thus grab better, but are less durable. Whichever belt you use, the clutches need to be adjusted for the belt. Inefficient clutches can blow any belt.

Belts are just like tires. Harder compound last longer but sacrifices performance (needs more pressure, pressure = heat and friction = loss of horsepower). Softer belts like the ultimaxs may not last as long but offer better performance. Efficiency is free horsepower so I run an ultimax.
