SRX startup lights
Does anyone know how long of a delay there is after the motor fires until the load relay closes? After my 3rd time fixing the wiring harnesses I only see my temp light blink once but I think that it has gone through the 3 blink cycle but doesnt have power to it until the 3rd blink. Wiring problem this weekend appeared as temp light coming on after a very rough section of trail. I determined temp was OK and coolant was circulating so I rode the ditches home and pulled, inspected, and repaired all engine compartment wire groups. Temp light doesnt come on except at startup and motor seems to run OK (if 110mph indicated sounds OK). Orginal wire rub-through 2 months ago was 2 of 3 white wires from mag to regulator shorted together. I forgot to measure V output from stator yesterday. Could stator be damaged? Lights, grips, tach, tail/brake lite all work fine.
Any ideas?

Is the load control relay supposed to activate at 700 rpms, when the motor starts?

yes, load control relay is activated at 700rpm of the engine, this allows more energy to be sent to the ign. system before the load applied by lighting system. the bulb(temp) flashes 3 times upon start up to show a functional diagnostic system, you may have a short else where yet, the 3 white wires from the stator are the heart of the system, maybe check the smaller wire circuits, temp sensor, gas guage, oil level, and see if any of these may have been melted in the short.
Also, to fix the harness and never have to mess with it again, pull it out completely from under the engine, repair and tape each individual wire seperately and then retape harness, and place in convoluted plastic loom, reinstall harness and it will never need attention again, plus you can look at all circuits to see where they need repaired.

thanks for the reply Mrviper700
I pulled the wiring harness from under the motor, checked it and wrapped it with armor. I didnt really find any problems with it. I re-repaired my original problem with the stator wires and wrapped them up. I disconnected all the connectors in that area, repaired another and neatly wrapped them all back up. Is it possible that the original short between 2 of the stator wires could have damaged it? I found your previous post on ohmic values for stator and mag and will verify that. Is the stator a 3- phase ac generator? Do you know the voltage that comes out of it to the volt reg?. I am going to check that and the output from the regulator. I will also examine the CDI connectors for corrosion or other problems. Any other ideas?

update- still at it...extra lube helps
OK I see 2.5 blinks and the highbeam light flickers briefly when I start. Removed headlight relay and then I see 3 normal. So I pulled the harness AGAIN. Getting good at it. I found another wear-through, on the green wire this time. I tried drying out both relays for a day, no change. I dont think it's causing me any operational problems just bugs me. I hope I can get it back together for this weekend or Kim says she will ride without me. LOOKOUT!
Edit- I thought maybe my pics might be a bad influence on the younger members... this one shows the wiring harness as it sits outside of where its supposed to be. Without the extra lubrication.

Don't mean to hyjack archers thread but reading this got me thinking, i got
two buddys with almost the same sled one is a '01 VM5 deluxe and the other is a '02 VM6 deluxe,,on the '02 the temp light flashes 3 times on start up.but the '01 doesn't flash at all on start up..bulb looks good..is there a problem with the '01 because it's not flashing??????

I just pulled those freakin wires out ( had to raise the engine a little to get them unhooked from a hook) and saw no bare wires or problem. I rewrapped them but have decided to run the wire near the coils and by the belt cover and to the connection by the hood.

I ran my fingers down each one of the wires and felt a couple rough spots. One was definately rubbed through but I dont know yet if that was the one... I got 2 new band-aids on my hand as I type this. Tough job. I hope I got it right this time.
