o.k. crappy winter in upstate, rode the vmax yesterday, had a problem, need some help. Rode sled for 30 miles, ran pretty good, stopped and had lunch. Jumped on the sled started on first pull. Drove 1/4 mile and sled stopped. Couldn't pull, siezed? No. Talked to the buddies, started the sled again, drove 500 ft. same thing. Towed back. Sed has compression, I still need to do a comp. test. Any initial thoughts, were should I begin? :die:

Water in the carbs, froze when you stopped, leaned out the jets, seized it. Seen it happen before. Maxdlx

When you talked to your buddies it gave the pistons time to retract and thats why it pulled right over again. When it get that hot it expands the piston which intern helps with the seizing.

same thing happend to my moms 600 vmax. one of the crank bearing were going bad. rode the sled all day then shut it off then whent to start it again and i wouldent budge. wiggle the clutch a little bit and away it went. this whent untill we got it home took it appart. the peice that keeps the balls appart was gone and the bearings were hitting each other causing the motor to stop

The saga continues

OK. compression - 115 psi each cylinder. in talking with area dealer, old timer, problem with '97 bearings on magneto end of crank. Yamaha installed 2 small bearings, outer bearing had trouble getting oiled. Solution, replace with large bearing found in '98 motor. Can any one confirm? :o| :yam:

Thats the first i've heard of that.....

yes they did have problems with those bearings, and he's right, the bearings on the newer 700 red heads are bigger.

So what are you saying....be aware of the '97 700's????

no not at all, they are great engines, and most of them will go 10,000 miles without any problems, but some of them go 4 or 5,000 and the pto bearings go. Its not a very difficult fix though. I am a little more uneasy about turning down the oil pumps on the 97 700's though, like to leave those a little richer. Never had a problem with my own in 7,000 miles, and buddy is still running it now.

i agree with the crank bearing theory my buddie had similar problems on a rmk. every 100 or so miles it would lock up. we would spin the primary clutch backwards and that would free it up for a little while longer. it took awhile to get back but it made it.

Hmmm....first time hearing this,i've seen LOTS of these '97 7's with 5-10k....

Yea i know it's an easy fix

bearing replacement

the seal on the magneto side is toast. local dealers says replace it with 98 larger bearing. what do you guys think?

the max is back, bearing install went extremely well, just as the dealer said it would. got real lucky on repair. no other damage to the motor. i,m going to email yamaha try to get some satisfaction. oh yeah, fixed just in time to put it up for the year. #$%&* #$%&* #$%&*
