reverse kit

My 98' MSRX7 has 15w gears, I'm wanting to put a MViper reverse kit on this machine, but I believe it's 13W gearing. Would it be possible to replace my 15w gears with 13w gears and chain without any problems?

MrSled,

I have a all the gears and the 70T chain 13W, ...I've trial fit them into the gear case and looks ok in terms of fit and alignment with the tensioner. Would the existing spacers provide the same top/bottom gear alignment, the only difference being added space on the outside of the gear, ...do I need to add different spacers to center the gears?

Do you know what the purpose of having a 15W gear set and chain on the SRX 98-99 models and 13W on the newer models? Will a 13W setup in this model be overstressed?

Thx.
Dave

I was thinking that the thinner gear would need more spacer. Check in the Micro Fische (Parts Finder) and cross reference the part numbers, I maybe be wrond, they may have taken the space up in the sprockets ....but if the sprockets line up and there is no interference, it should be fine..... ;)!

HYVO chain and gears

The newer 00 and up SRX and Viper use HYVO 3/4" silent gears and chain, not interchangable with 13 wide Yamaha gears like the SXR and MMax. Must be different pitch, just a reminder.

Gild,

So if I put 00' and up SRX 13W gear and chain into my SRX 98' gear box, shouldn't be a problem?

Thanks for your expertice guys, ...you saved me a lot of grief!

Reverse kit

I'm not real sure but I think the viper and rx1 use the same reverse setup and if that's the case then you can't interchange the gears with mm/srx because the spline on rx gears is about 1/8" bigger dia., Ken.

Almost finished my 98' MSRX7 reverse kit install. The MViper gearcase had to be ground down and the coolant reservoir will have to be relocated (could use suggestions on this one), ...the stock muffler fits!!!

Good Job!!! I can't remember what the coolant reservoir looks like or how its mounted but maybe you can use a mm rad cap assy and overfow bottle. Looks like you will have some fun with the pull cord also. You don't want to have to pull the recoil cover if it breaks. Almost have to pull the motor to get that pesky bottom bolt.

I've ordered a new HV 23T top gear and 70Tchain (the kit came with a 39T driven), should be here early next week. The shift linkage, gear cover and muffler were temporarily mounted just so I could find a home for the coolant overflow tank. Might have to relocate the air scoop for the brake caliper to find room for the overflow tank. The MM rad cap assembly might be the way to go. Also...the shift linkage comes with a rounded frame so the pull cord doesn't chafe, looks like there is no obstruction or change in the pull cord route (I pulled it up over the brake to place the gear cover).

In any case, once I get this project finished, I'll post the mods including pics.

Update:

Managed to fit my overflow tank as well as my brake scoop...

gears

Climbmax when I had my MSRX I had clutch heat problems running that tall gearing. I know you are restricted because of the 39 reverse gear but I had more sucess with 20/40 with 68 link chain 8 tooth drivers. maybe you can get more info of this site before you buy that 23 top gear and 70 link chain.could save you some dollars.

Gild,

The driven gear in the kit is a custom with coupling, I'm pretty much stuck with it. My riding is foot hills and groomed trails, ...I don't take it much into the deep power (too heavy). With a pretty much stock setup, I found last season with 21/39 gears, 8T drivers and 2" paddle, my track spent a lot of time spinning. I had the same problem with my Vmax (21/37, 8T and 1.5" paddles), ...I went to a 23/37 and I couldn't believe the "hook up". I'm hoping to try the same with my SRX next season, ...because I'm stuck with the 39T, I might be able to go to a 22T and keep my chain (might be worth the $35).
