hey all

gonna be getting my sled back this week...i ended up getting in a bit over my head and had to ship it out. in case u missed the other post (3,2,1 meltdown), 3 new pistons and rings, new cylender, along with new crank seals. what is the proper procedure for breaking this thing in? now keep in mind, i live in CT and there is NO snow here at all. i'll be going up to pittsburg in about 2 weeks, and would like to try to break it in before then. any advice or suggestions? i've been told in the first 2 tankfuls to mix oil in 100 to 1 to be sure the motor is getting enough lube. now my next question (which im sure a lot of you have opinions about) is......would this be a good time to switch to synthetic? i have heard that it is a good idea to break in a motor with good ol dino-based oil, as synthetic doesn't seat the rings as quickly? and also, should i even switch? my burn down had nothing to do with the oil, it was the problem of someone just throwning in a cheap piston when there was a lot more wrong with the machine. any comments or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks guys

Do not run Synthetic oil for break in. It will take forever to seat your rings, if they seat properly at all. I use Yamalube non synthetic for break in. Your rings should seat within 100 miles or so. I also never mix my fuel with oil. If your motor is getting sufficient oil flow with the pump, you shouldn't need to.

Use Yamalube and run it like normal,,don't baby it too much,,
then if you whant switch to syn. after a few hundred miles or so....$.02

valin, i thought all the yamalube was semi-synthetic?

now another question, like i mentioned, i live in CT and there is no snow at all, and i'm going up to pittsburg in 2 weeks.....should i at least let the sled run for a few hours before i bring it up there?

Yea you can start it to make shure it runs good,, but don't run it too long.

Break-in is over rated, just take the thing out and trail ride it. Everything will be fine if motor is properlly clearanced. Check your jetting, make sure there is no water in your tank, add a couple of ounces of seafoam, this will dissapate any water in the tank. Don't do any wide open runs for the first 100 miles, it will be fine. Most importantly, ALLWAYS let the motor warm up before you stand on it. With tight piston clearances, this can give a cold seize pretty easy.(cylinders are cold, piston is hot, stuff doen't fit so well in these conditions)

well said, i concur

I'll back that up...get it to operating temp put a few miles on it then drive it like you stole it.....first time that thing turns 8500 and something its right you will know it!
rock on!

thanks a lot guys i appreciate it! so the basic consencuss is just ride it? i'll be puttin on about 150 miles a day so after the first day i should be good to really get on her? prolly gonna stay off the lake all together though, considering my last experience up there didnt go so well.......lol

one more thing..considering my compression was at about 115 across all 3 before the meltdown, what should i be lookin at now? and will i notice a difference in power? i can't even imagine that because the only thing beatin me across the lake when i fried it was an 05 sabercat

I'd start it up for 10 mins, get it hot, shut it down.Let it cool for a hour or so ,then repeat this a couple of more times. Then take it easy for about 100 miles,I'd mix 100-1 for about 5 gallons. Then your good too go!!!

ya i've rebuilt 5 phazer motors, 3 srx's and a 94 vmax and all i did was ride it normally for break in and i've never had a problem. You just want your motor to be run at varying speeds for 100 miles and nothing gives you the most variety then a trail ride. after about 20 miles don't be afraid to give her a few full throttle blasts don't hold it there long but a few seconds is fine to stretch her legs. with three new pistons and rings you should see some more performance once it breaks in. hope it runs strong and have fun.

the manual says to break in with first tank full mixed at 50 to 1 ratio as does piston manufactures in their directions warm motor up to operating temp to avoid cold seizure vary throttle to scuff all the cylinder and not just one spot you can run it at full throttle just donot do any long pulls as the 50 to 1 mixture leans the motor out after that first tank full you can ride it hard the reason for the mixed gas is to prevent seizure in case there is any air bubbles in your oil line cheap insurance so you don not have to rebuild the motor again you can run it on a stand just make sure to vary the throttle and make sure it does not over heat.if it was rebuilt right you should be able to go to pittsburg and just ride it and not have to run it on a stand and risk over heating it also watch out for low snow conditions to avoid over heating

you shouldn't have to worry about any air bubbles in the oil lines if you didn't have the oil lines off, but adding a little oil to the gas won't hurt either for the first tank.

on thew nicasil cylinders i dont worry about it, i drive them afterr 20 miles like i stole it. i built alot of motors,i dont think rings actualy seat on a chrome bore.they are seated in after 10 minutes of riding in my opinion

thanks for the info guys, think i'm gonna go with the 50:1 in the first tank and take it easy for a bit just to make sure....dont wanna blow her up after all the $ i just put into her, and it sure wouldnt hurt to take it easy a bit!
