Hey guys. I was supposed to go on a long day trip in the morning with 4 buds.
Went outside to do the usual checks and grease job. Started sled, pulled it out of shed and engagement was at 3500 rpm. She usally engages at around 4300-4400 rpm. Sure enough-- broken primary spring.
No trip for me now .
The primary spring is painted all red with no other paint on it.
Weights say 89a on them with only a single hole. I can't tell what kind of rivets are in them. Is this stock parts or aftermarket? Called dealer and he has no clue about the all red spring and told me that must be an aftermarket clutch kit. He told me all he can do is get me the original stock parts.
My secondary has a black spring with a green torqoise-ish colour paint mark on it.Can barely make out the stripe b/c its worn off. Top rpm was about 8500 rpm at full throttle. Does anyone know what set up I have?
This was on the sled when I bought it two years ago.
thanks,
mul

Hard to tell whose aftermarket spring that was, but several other springs would work well with that setup, including the w-w-w

I forgot to mention my sled is a 98 srx7.
Can I buy this w-w-w spring at my yamaha dealer?
Will it still give me around 4300 engagement?
Also, should I stick with the 89a's or look for some 8dn-20's.
Should there be any "play" in the primary where the sliding sheave runs
(I think that's what it's called)?? Clutching is all new to me. I have the clutch off and want it right before I put it back on.
Thanks,
mul

I had the Bender clutch kit in my 99 SRX and it had a all red spring in it. The Pink secondary spring is stock. The Stock Primary weights are 8DN-10. I think the 98 is the same

w-w-w will give you about 3800 engagement. That is the best you will do with a stock yammie spring. rpm,s should be close tho.

So will it feel more sluggish off the start with the lower engagement?
Can you add shims to up the engagement rpm?
thanks

Does each shim raise rpm by 100? What is the max number of shims you can install?
I was thinking 2 or 3 to bring engagement up to around 4000.
thanks

You could just get a bender or maxx perf spring with the same total force but higher preload to up your engagement.
