WaveRunner 500 questions

I recently bought an older Yamaha WaveRunner 500 pwc. It is currently in good working order, nothing ever done to it (to my knowledge). I am for some mods to do to it. Preferably nothing to the engine or carburation. I was looking into buying an aftermarket intake grate that DG Performance made for that model. The stock grate has 3 bars, i was reading on some sites that you can actually cut out the middle bar(s) and just have the side ones (like the aftermark grates). Now the water that I usually ride on is a smooth and calm surface (with the occasinal 1' waves lol). Would it be ok to cut out the middle bar on my stock intake grate? Most places iv'e read up on say that would improve the acceleration by a noticeable amount.

I am not up on the Waverunner but that sounds interesting idea....yes ...please we need some feedback
