hey guys, I am looking to buy a used srx this summer. I have always been a fan of the srx and was curious as to what the difference was between the years, and which year would be better to buy? any help would be great.
thanks
aj

1998 SRX 700: First year for this sled, they had bad cranks from the factory. Almost all have been fixed by now but have your dealer check out the VIN # before you buy one to make sure it's been done. Black bellypan, blue hood on these sleds.

1999 SRX: Cranks from the factory were stronger than the '98s. '99 and all years after have Blue bellypan, blue hood. Graphics are a little different than the '98s. I believe this was the year that they relocated the servo to a different spot also??

2000 SRX: SRX motor was changed for about 7 more HP. Dual headlights, new graphics, this year SRX is basically all blue.

2001 SRX: Trailing arms, radius rods, and tunnel are silver instead of blue like previous years. New brake disc, first year for separate hand/thumb warmer controls. I believe 2001 was the first year for the 300W magneto also.

2002 SRX: New graphics and DCS(Detonation Control System) was added.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things but this will get you started.

99+ came with some heat exchanger gards, some 99s were black bellied some were blue.

98 and 99 are the only years for the 600 (smaller bore)

98 was the only year for the MountainSRX. not a true mountain sled, more of a long track midwest sled 136x1.5 track, same front end, lower gearing.

2000 and newer have a stronger steering collum, higher output magneto. the more engine power comes from slightly more agressive porting and 3d mapped ignition

FOLK LORE SAYS 99,s HAD BAD CRANKS TOO. I HAD NO ISSUES WITH MY 99. I HAVE 2000 SRX AND A 2002 SRX. I LOVE THEM BOTH!! if i had to pick my favorite, i would say 2002, but you can,t go wrong here!! IF YOUR GONNA BUY ONE, GO BIG, GET 00-02 , ALL AWSOME. 3:16 (tony)

Mountain SRX

The 98 Mountain SRX had different shocks up front(longer or something like that) and actually had the Proaction 11.5 instead of the 8.8 in the rear

they shaved something like 12 lbs. off the 2002 vs. the 01

First i've heard of that. From where? Also, the 2000-2002 are all the same h.p. Of course there are going to be some weaker and some stronger ones because of differences in tolerances, but nothing significant enough to talk about. 01's and 02's also rev quicker because of a lighter flywheel. Lot of myths on this thread...

SLIGHT WEIGHT DEFFERENCE BETWEEN 98-99 VS 00-02. FOR STARTERS IN CHAINCASE WHERE 00-02 HAD 13 WIDE GEARS VS 15 WIDE 98-99. HUGE DEFFERENCES HERE THATS NEVER MENTION IN JETTING. YAMAHA UP JETTING IN 01, BUT DROPED IT BACK DOWN AGAIN WITH DCS !! 3:16 (tony)

Pulled this from a Motorsports archive;

ProAction Plus X long-travel rear suspension is consistently rated #1 for the plushest ride in snowmobiling. Rebuildable, aluminum-bodied KYB gas shocks have 1 1.5 inches of true, useable travel. Bearings or bushings at key pivot points reduce friction for quick, efficient action. A 3-position rear shock mount allows changing effective spring rate without changing springs.

... not to mention the only factory SRX with a 136" track.

my 98 does not have electric start and i had heard that it wasn't even an option for 98. funny though the key sw has a position for it and the decal says it?

thanks guys all the imput helps alot. Looks like I am going to look for a 01 or 02 is the best choice. Now I already know that the yamaha rear suspensions are a little rough, have you guys ever heard on have a AD Bovin expert on a srx700? Also I am just looking for some performance stuff on this sled, any Input on pipes, big bores, etc. I currently run a 05 fusion, and by all means I love the hell out of it for trail riding, but the sound and look of the SRX just rocks. I must have one.

blue missile,

Electric start wasn't an option for ANY year SRX that I know of.

aja636,
Good choice on the '01 or '02. Those are the years I would pick too. There's a few guys on this forum that have Expert-X and M10 on their SRX's. I would think a M10 would be better for trail riding. Expert X is more for ditchbanging and rough trails. From what I've read aftermarket pipes are a waste of money for this sled unless you're running a big bore. MrViper700 does porting for these sleds and lots of guys are happy with his results. I'm not sure on the HP gain or the price though.....that would be something you'd have to talk to him about. Other things that help these sleds are studs, transfer rods, and a clutch kit. I'd be willing to bet that a '01 or '02 SRX is going to feel faster than your Fusion.

Alot faster.....LOL

I have been on the lake racing and granted some fusions just don't run well, but mine is clutched very well and stock to stock I have beatin srx's already. I am a hugh triple/triple fan, no sled out there can pull top end like a triple, I would agree 100% with you guys saying it will feel faster.
Any who, the SRX is a bad *** sled, that is why I am looking to by one. you guys have got me pointed in the right direction.

Shortstop20, I am looking at going the big bore route, the hauck 920 or 925, is the kit I am looking at now. Something about being close to 200 hp in a sled that was very fast from the factory just does it for me.

Thos BB going to be relyable or they going to tear the crank up...WOW... ;)!

from what I hear they are pretty reliable. I have never heard of crank problems but with the 900 bb kit they weld the crank shaft. I mean any time you put that much power there will surely be heavy wear on parts but this sled is going to be my play sled.
