My phazer was idling high today- around 3000 rpm. I looked and found the clamps holding the rubber boots on my carb were loose. I took the pressure equalizer bottle of my carbs to make more room to work and when I pulled it of I accidently hit a peice of plastic and a screw that was sitting on it flew up in the air and somehow found its way down one of the holes for the bottle, right into my carb
. Luckily the reeds stopped it before it fell down into the crank. I tried fishing it out with a magnet but ended up having to take of my airbox (not easy) and carbs and retrieve the screw. then I started putting it all back together and a bolt holding a carb boot to the motor broke off
. I managed to get the bolt out and I got a new one. Finally I got the thing back together and ready to take out of the shop. I opened the door and pulled it out by the ski tips. As luck would have it, I was not paying attention and the overhead door was not opened far enough and it put a HUGE crack in my brand new black windsheild
. Th good news: my carbs are clean and my phazer works now. Talk about a bad day!!!

Dude, that definately wasnt your day!
Shizit happens though, and everyone here knows how much of a B!@#@! it is to get a bolt or screw from inside the sled when you drop it, we have all been there... Those pahzers and exciters are the worst pain in eternity to work on though, everything is so crammed!!, kind of liek the fourstrokes, but lukily, you never really have to open their hoods anyways.
Get a real short windsheild, they look really cool!

Your right about the phazers being hard to work on! All that plastic shrouding for cooling really takes up alot of space under the already small hood. I guess that's the price ya have to pay for them being such a light sled. How is the 97' and newer style chasis to work on? Do they give a little more room to work at least? By the way Yamahammer: that sled looks sweet. I bet that big track and light motor will really haul through the snow nice!

Oh you betcha it does, nothing else can touch it in the deep stuff, although it does need a little more jam for those tough snowy back country hills. This past weekend, she just barely snuck over the tops of a few of them, and I had er barred!
If you mean the newer style chassis, they start from 99-01, then 03-now in the venture and they are awsome, lots of room for anything you might need and are preety good to work on, definately alot more room than other sleds.
Your phazer is alot like the exciter, and my buddy has both and theyre super tight either way to to work on, they remind me of a rev, or the Rev reminds me of the phazer/exciter, hahaa! And yes, theyre super light!
BTW, you should see my sled in the water, OMG, awsomeness!, except when the track ratchets cuz the water is making the sprockets slip on the inner lugs, but thats only when I dip the skis in the water then run. It water wheelies awsome!, but this is only in 2ft of water on top of the ice, not real water, but she does run open water, like a boat I might add. No pics though and im done running water, woke up one day and realized how stupid risk it is.

Running water is a lot of fun but it does kind of suck when you sink it. Thats amazing that you could dip your skis in the water then go... don't see many sleds that can do that. I only got about 1/4" of lug left so i usually avoid the big water. I've heard these old Phazers really skip on top of the water though so mabey if I find a 1" tack. Our old 1979 enticer with a 3/4" track will forever on the water though. Lot's of fun!!

I've learned it's just as easy to leave the airbox in, but remove the bolts under the cover by the fuel door. Just undo the clamps, remove the rear clamps by spreading them, remove the rubber boot between the airbox and carbs (PITA). Then just slide them back and up. As my three Phazers need repair, I've been replaceing a lot of the bolts with stainless steel ones. Helps in the long run and we have a super hardware store here in town. I wish Yamaha would made the cowling over the gastank/airbox two piece so you didn't have to remove everything to get it off.

Thanks for the advice. I will definetly try that next time. I'm sure pretty much anything would be easier than removing the airbox completely. By the way, how do you like the Aaen pipe. I've heard it's the best one for a balance of reliability and hp. Do you know of any other mods for these phazers that boost performance without destroying their reliability?

It was already piped, studded and clutched when I got it. The pipe is a "little" louder than the stock one (more for the rider than the neighbors). As far as performance between my three, the other two won't touch mine. I wouldn't go as far as saying the piped & clutched one is like a stock Exciter, but close. Oh...and it's been punched out first size over. I've been running Phillips 66 Synjex, but going to switch back to regular Phillips 66 when I run out. Just keep the carbs clean (pull and clean about every 3-4 years).

I have never removed my air box to remove the carbs. It is very easy to just remove the boots which leaves plenty of room to work. With the exception of doing inner tie rods I have always thought phazers were one of the most sevicable sled out there!

Yeah, I just bought it, so I'm slowly working through the whole thing a bit at a time and replacing or adjusting and cleaning everything. Some parts have a lot of corrosion on them so it's tough to get them apart. I guess from now on I won't take the airbox of since everyone says I don't need to. Thanks for the advice
