I set the valves on a 1998 SRX using Yamaha set up specs. Apply 12 volts to the set up plug and adjust the cables to create a gap of between .08 and .14 of an inch. I noticed a thread some time ago that talked about setting the valves by feeling inside the exhaust port. Is the exhaust port method better and if so, why? Thanks in advance.

Go by the exhaust port specs because you will know for a fact that they are accurate. If you go by the measurements, you can't be certain that all of the cables are made the exact same length and you will not know if there is stretch in the cable. When you do it all by hand, you are sure that there will be a flush exit of the exhaust.
