Will i get any performance benefits from changing to a different type of reed on my 97 sx 700? i'm not exactly sure what exactly the reeds do and am hoping someone can give me a quick explanation.....any suggestions on what product is best?

won't gain any horsepower but you might pick up a little throttle response. Yamaha has great stock reeds compared to the rest of the factories.

i put v force 2 in my sled and it made a difference with the pipes. idk what it would do for you with stock pipe. a lot quicker throttle response. cleans it up a little too

Quite simply the reeds act as a one way valve of sorts.viperino said:i'm not exactly sure what exactly the reeds do.
Reed valves are used in most two-stroke Snowmobile engines to control the fuel-air mixture that is admitted to the engine crankcase. As the piston rises in the cylinder the resulting vacuum opens the valve and admits the fuel-air mixture. Then combustion takes place and the piston descends, as it decends the crankcase pressure increases causing the reed valve to close. This retains the mixture and pressurizes it for its eventual transfer through the intake ports to the combustion chamber. Bascally the reeds are there to keep a charge of fuel inside the crankcase kind of in the "On Deck" position. They do a pretty good job at it. The lesser petals are not very fast at fluttering which is why V-Force reeds are popular on other makes of sleds. since they are 1/2 the size as the longer oem petals they can change states quicker.
The easiest way of looking at it is they work the same way as our heart valves.
