Well I must say, I was not impressed. I have an 03 viper, 1600 miles on it, 144 woodys, and MBRP trail can, other than that stock. A friend of mine has an 05 ski doo rev 500ss, no studs, and a dyno port can, other than that stock. Due to the icy conditions on the lake, we took off side by side until about 40 MPH, and then both WOT, and I could not beleive it. The 500ss was dead even with me across the lake. I was reading 104 on the dream meter, and he was only one half of a sled length behind mine. Any way had to post it, I was not impressed with the viper this time.

Definetly something wrong with your Viper. On ice you should see 120 plus on the dream meter. Start with watching your RPM's to see what the motor is doing and work from there.

Thats what I was thinking. The lake was not very long, and the sled has run the same since the day I bought it brand new. RPM's are at 8600 which is normal for stock. The most I've ever seen on a long, long run on the dream meter is 112. I beat a ski doo mach 1, 700 tripple the same day, however this 500ss was fast. I took it across the lake myself, and got 94 MPH, on the dream meter, I was highly impressed.

If I'm not mistaken that 500ss is actually a 600 liquid which is rated between 115-120 hp and the viper is no more than 120. ski-doos hook up well and I think this one is lighter than the viper. I do believe that you said he was behind you. If you're stock I think you did all right.

yeah if it was a 550ss,i think those are the ones that are 600's there light and quick, but are on fire a lot on the side of the trail...LOL

yup those are really 600's, and they aren't too bad when set up correctly. My cousin has one, he weighs just a hair under 300 and he can pull 98 on the speedo with his clutch work.

Just raced a 500 ss with a stock viper last weekend. Viper just has a #3 clutch kit, Viper smoked it pretty bad. All we had to do was try to peer through the snow dust to try to get a glimps of my buddy on my piped viper up a 1/8 mile ahead.

the 500ss is the 600 motor and they run pretty good but a viper should beat it. i ride with two of them when we do some couples riding and my friends will take them out and burn the carbon out of them for thier wifes and they are real quick, nice sleds havent heard the fire thing before. how tight is your track? if you are racing on bare ice and your track is set to factory, forget about beating much on the lake, sliders will start to stick after about 30 seconds robbing your speed. i had the same issue, pull up your limiters a little and run your track as loose as you can until it starts to ratchet then tighten a little. it made a huge difference on mine. also put a pencil mark on your primary at the top run wot for a good run to make sure you are getting full shift. if you have a mark still showing on the sheave them even though your rpms are right you are not shifting all the way out.

"until it starts to ratchet then tighten a little."

What do you mean by ratchet? I added studs to my track and now at top end I hear an occasional noise. I have protectors, but it doesn't seem like it would be bottoming out on a flat run. Could that be ratcheting? Do you normally tighten up a track after studding?

ratcheting is when the track drivers jump on the inner lugs of the track under hard acceleration. Does it when the track is too loose and you get a lot of traction.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I only get the computer when i'm at work. My track is set to approximately 1.5 inches of space, which is a little looser than spec's. I just studded, and put new sliders on this year, however track may be still too tight, because I have noticed the sliders are getting worn down fast. And for the power valve question. I do not know if they are adjusted properly, I clean them evey season, but that is it.

srxbully you think the valves need to be adjusted? The sled only has 1600 miles on it, and it seems to be just as fast as the day I bought it.

Powervalve adjustment would definately be a good place to start. Clean them, then follow the procedure either on the tech pages or do a search. Topic has been beaten to death.

I smoke my buddies 600 HO Rev all day long. Check your clutching out and power valves.

Wow! that ain't right???? I was runnin with firecats and 800 revs when I was stock. Never won but they would only win by, AT MOST, 2 sleds. Since the triples I haven't lost to either of them. Check your valves, rpm's and clutch shifting out all the way...you know like the other guys said. Good luck and don't be disappointed in your sled it a goodin.
