I recently blew a center connecting rod on my Viper motor. The damaged rod caused a small crack in my lower crankcase. I have been unable to find a used crankcase and am wondering if anyone has had any luck welding crankcases to repair cracks. The crack is directly beneath the connecting rod and is not at any of the bearing jornals.
yes, it can be tig welded without any problems. The key to a good tig weld repair is it to be perfectly clean, crack beveled back(filed edges) so good weld pentration and pre heated, will work perfect then, allow to cool slowly, no water.

YES!!! I did the exact same thing to an sx crankcase one time. Got it welded by an aluminum welder externally, and it has held up for thousands of miles since that rebuild. That engine held up to 10,000 rpms for 5,000 miles before breaking a piston skirt and bending the rod.

I had someone lay a big booger MIG weld to seal a crack on my last cat when it droped a piston skirt. it wasn't in a very structual area, so I just needed to make sure no air got in

Had my Phazer case welded (twice...oooppss). He welded both the inside and outside. Inside had to be ground down with a diegrinder but wasn't very much. I then smeared on some JB weld on the outside just to make sure if any pinholes were there, they got sealed.

Don't waste your time with the welder and a welder can cause you problems if he goes too close to the machined surface. If its just that push out crack with no metal missing like they all get, tap it down from the outside, walk a grinder all over the insidewhere you are going to repair it, heat it up with a torch get all the oil out of it, clean it with brake clean, repair it with Devcon, or Marine Tex. If you're afraid to do it send em down.
