I have an '01 SRX and like the speed, but want a more comfortable ride. What are upgrading options and what do they cost? I'm assuming you need to mechanically inclined to install something different too, so I'll have to have someone else do the work. Since I cannot afford an APEX, how can I get just as comfortable (or as close as possible) of a ride?

Depending on your weight I HEAR good things about the M10 and for heavier guys the Expert X

Srx Suspensions
I might be biased since I have an APEX GT and an SRX. Lots of guys here have had great luck installing a Viper rear suspenion. It's a bolt it. Have the rear shocks revalved for this application and get the long travel / wide kit for the front. I have done this to mine and I feel that it is as good as my APEX.
I like them both. Contrary to what some told me before I bought the APEX, I still love the SRX and will never part with it

You can get a set of new update Viper shocks from betheviper for $200. A revalve job is about $325. Is a no brainer to me. Put a set of the Viper shocks on mine, set'm up like yamaholic says, flipped the front shock mounts and it rides pretty darn nice. Best $200 buck I spent on mine.

pioneer performance and maxx performance build GREAT long travel kits for the srx, and not very expensive at all.

I am in the same boat as you JERSEYJOE. Even with Apex GT I cannot get rid of my SRX. On the suspension it's really an issue of how much you want to spend. There's no comparison between my Expert X and a viper skid, but the viper skid is a big improvement over stock. As far as being mechanically inclined enough to install an aftermarket skid, there is a ton of people on this site with a wealth of info that are happy to help.
I have the maxx performance long travel rear and extensionsions on the ohlins up front with the longer ski stance and a 1 1/4 track no studs thing rides pretty good it feels plush to me, lost alot of top speed with track and long travel only seeing 105 on the speedo but rides 100% better

it isn't that tough to install a Expert. its just a little nerve racking when it comes to drilling the holes.
basicly pull the old out, measure, drill the first hole, attach the plate, drill the second hole, repeat, install skid.

Agreed
Yup, yup. Measure twice, drill once. Once you measure to get the first hole perfect the rest is a cakewalk. The side reinforcement panels will not let you screw anything up after that. I could never go back to a pro-action skid, just my personal opinion. I think my expert rides just as nice as the monoshock in my RX-1 or Apex. And it transfers weight WAY better.

shocks
Maxximum performance long traveled the rear shocks on my 02 SRX set to my weight and riding style. MAN,What a differance that made. I would DEFINATELY recommend them to anyone.

great stuff
Thanks for all of the replies. Maybe there's hope yet. I definitely would like to keep the cost as minimal as possible. Does anyone have contact info. for some of the above suggestions? JerseyJoe and ejcamaro, I also have and '05 Rx-1 that I love, but still have fun with the SRX. I used to have a '99 SRX and traded it for the RX-1. The ride was day and night difference, so I thought I'd never miss the 2stroker. Well, I came across a deal on this '01 and it's been a good decision. The only thing is it made me appreciate the newer suspensions so much more.

A lot of good info here. I would suggest the following for you. Someone mentioned that BETHEVIPER has a set of revalved shock for sale. Buy them.
Remove your rear skidframe and check all the plastic bushings. Also check the front W arm for cracks. When you find them, not if you find them, have someone weld them and reinforce it. Any fabricator can figure out how to do it. Install the Viper shocks and order from YAMAHA the Viper front limiter straps since they are longer. This will give you a BIG improvement over the stock set-up for about $250.00 ( shocks bushings, limiters). The front needs to we wider and longer. The Maxximum kit is good, but costly. Go on EBAY and look for a set of SRX front Ohlins used. If you find a set you can screw on extensions and use them in the long travel kit. The long travel kit comes two ways. The less expensive one is just SXR factory rods, the better one has ball joints on BOTH ends, and a different upper shock bracket. Since I already had factory Ohlins this is what I did and am very happy with the results. The more expensive long travel kit gives you longer shocks that are also good. I am sure others have different opinions, but this set-up works for me.

You don't need a new suspension, that would be a waste of hard earned cash. Pioneer performance or Maximum performance can revalve your shocks and change your settings for a Cadillac ride with no loss on top end. An M 10 or Bovine will ride well, but subtract the topend performance your sled was built for.

Maxximum performance is closing the door's.
I have a expert in my 02 SRX and it rides awesome, I also have the pioneer wide front end kit, and together they are the way to go in my opinion, as for top end, I didn't lose anything. I have heard that with the m-10 you lose quite a bit; and with the expert, you'll get awesome transfer also.
