After removing my helix I found that the three plastic "buttons" that it slides on are fairly worn. How do I remove and replace them?

you have to remove the nuts that remove the helix and spring, then take a small flat screw driver and pry them out, they are pressed in slightly but will come out easy. Push the new buttons back in and if tight, tap with rubber hammer ;)!

You don't actually have to take the secondary apart to remove those. If you're doing it alone, set the parking brake and pry the secondary apart (full shift out) and wedge something non-abrasive inside it to hold it open. That will give you enough room to do what Mr. Sled described; the screw driver thingy. They can be changed in about 5 minutes.
